Now open below Broadway and Pike: Ox Billiards, Capitol Hill’s new underground pool hall

Michael Dominguez

After years as a — literally — underground boxing gym, there’s a new obsession forming below Broadway and Pike. Ox Billiards is now open.

CHS reported earlier this summer on Michael Dominguez’s plans for the snooker-focused pool hall taking over the space long home to Seattle Boxing Gym, formerly the tiny Seattle Boxing Studio, which outgrew its longtime Capitol Hill home and, in late 2019, moved to Interbay.

The new all-ages pool hall is reached by the same door the gym used on Broadway leading down to a club with 5,500 square feet of space housing four full-size snooker tables of mahogany and Chinese Gold, plus eight more nine-foot pool tables, black-finished and felted in blue by Rasson Billiards.

Rates run $15 an hour for open play on the tables on weekdays, $20 an hour on weekends and there is a happy hour rate of $12 every day from 3 to 7 PM. To prevent overcrowding and help keep space to make the place more COVID-19 safe, there is a limit of four people per table. You can reserve tables here.

Dominguez says his hope is for Ox Billiards to be both a venue for casual players and a center for those more serious about the games. The venue plans to offer open play plus lessons and training opportunities, along with special events like exhibitions and tournaments. For the truly hardcore, Ox offers memberships that grant players 24-hour access to the club and its array of finely tuned, perfectly spaced tables. Features, by the way, include heated slate, Dominguez says, to make the balls run smoother and faster.

His hope is also for snooker to catch on here at the corner of Broadway and Pike. “American pool is worldwide,” Dominguez told CHS earlier this year. “Snooker is worldwide — but not in the U.S.”

Ox Billiards is now open underground at 1432 Broadway every day from 3 PM to midnight. You can learn more at oxbilliards.com.
