  • Pot shop heist: The Ponder pot shop was robbed at gunpoint Saturday night in what police say was a coordinated “takeover” style hold-up involving a team of three armed suspects, each wearing facemasks, gloves, and armed with handguns. According to police, the suspects forced a security guard inside the store around 9:40 PM and confronted an employee and manager inside:

The males conducted a coordinated approach takeover style robbery where one suspect controlled the security guard by pointing the gun at his face. Another suspect controlled the sales associate and took the cash from the register. Another male took the manager to the rear of the store and instructed the manager to open the safe(s).

Police say the gunmen made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and also stole some of the store’s marijuana products and were last seen fleeing on foot. SPD says none of the Ponder employees suffered injuries in the heist. Barely 20 minutes later, police were called to another pot shop near the Aurora/Northgate area where a duo armed with handguns reportedly held up the store for cash and pot. There were no immediate arrests.

  • Street preacher arrest: A fight that broke out during a “conversation about religion” got the victim punched in the face and landed a reported Broadway street preacher in jail. According to the SPD brief on the Friday night incident, police were called to the intersection of Broadway and John around 8 PM to the reported assault. Police say the victim described the conversation and said the man who had been “preaching with a loudspeaker on the sidewalk” pushed him to the sidewalk and then punched him in the face. Police say the victim believed the attack was “due to his religious affiliation,” according to the report. The reported street preacher was booked into jail for investigation of malicious harassment.
  • Postal worker bias assault: Police were looking for the suspect who reportedly spat at and called a postal worker a racial slur in an incident Saturday afternoon around 4 PM in front of the 200-block Broadway post office:

The driver of a box truck made an illegal u-turn in the middle of Broadway which struck the victim’s postal cart while she was standing next to it. When the victim pointed this out to the driver, he immediately became angry and began screaming at the victim. During the course of this verbal assault the suspect spat directly on the victim and then called her a racial slur before he sped off. The suspect in this incident was described as an adult male with ear gages and multiple piercings, including on his face. The suspect fled before officer arrival and was not found.

“The victim was in full postal uniform and in a marked postal vehicle when this incident occurred, and Federal Law against the Assault of a Federal/Postal employee should apply,” the SPD brief on the incident reads.

  • Eye injury in Garfield pellet gun driveby: A 14-year-old girl suffered an eye injury after someone sped by a crowded 23rd Ave bus stop outside Garfield High and opened fire with a pellet gun in an incident investigate by SPD last Thursday afternoon. According to the SPD brief on the incident, police were looking for information about a dark colored compact car used in the assault. The 14-year-old victim was struck in the eye by one of the pellets and immediately suffered vision loss, SPD says. Firefighters treated the victim at the scene before she was taken to Harborview by her family. There were no immediate arrests.

Thank you for continuing to cover the violence around Garfield. This is terrible and I hope the person hit in the eye is able to recover. I had been hoping that our stretched police force would be able to actually be there as school lets out, which is when trouble seems to happen.

More like police “farce”. You see how effective they are at just about anything other than creating fake news and endangering the public.

YOU asked for defunding police and THIS is what we got. Our force is down 300 officers. They are doing GREAT, considering how you and yours treated them in 2020. We need more officers, harder prosecutions, and armed security. Our force is down 300 officers. I have been assisted by SPD dozens of times since moving here in 1999, including recently. Be prepared for more criminals on the street until we crack the whip on the low-life worms roaming around. Take a shooting class at Wade’s in Bellevue and be prepared.

The force is down before and funding conversations happened, those are not cause & effect.
Police don’t prevent crime, they respond to crime, and have a <50% solve rate. In every story in this post, the police did not find a suspect or make any arrests.

Police don’t prevent crime”

They absolutely do prevent crime. Same way the very presence of a cat will keep rats away.

How many officers have been cut due to “defunding”? Oh, that’s right ZERO. We still have an ample budget to hire more, and most of the officers we lost were due to their arrogant and delusional decision to pretend masks and vaccines were ineffective before contracting covid.

How we treated them in 2020? You mean how we kept inhaling their tear gas and pepper spray, getting hit with their batons, and getting shot with flash grenades for having the audacity to suggest that they were violent and unaccountable? They sure proved us wrong by being incredibly violent while not being held accountable.

We have this spike in gun violence while still paying hundreds of millions of dollars to SPD. They have not been defunded, they just keep crying about it to cover the fact that they are inept and ineffective at preventing violence or crime. It’s time to actually cut their budget and invest in other solutions, because SPD is incredibly bad at their job.

Yeah, no. “defund” resulted in a disaster, progressive political activists pushed for it, and now normal people suffer the consequences while the privileged progressives proclaim they want more.

If you hadn’t noticed, on Nov 3 2021 we voted against your anti-cop agenda. Suggest you probably should take the L and learn to listen and evolve from that, but I’m guessing you, like other progressive activists I encounter on other forums, likely will double-down instead.

We need a review of zoning around potshops. There needs to be a buffer zone between the shops and residences. The continuous armed robberies at this location demand extra scrutiny. The public is being put at high risk due to these unsafe businesses located close to schools and adjacent to public transit.

The only reason they’re unsafe is because banks won’t work with them, so they only deal in cash. So there’s no avoiding them having TONS of cash on hand. They all have security guards and cameras but this will happen forever until banks start being adults and work with cannabis companies, which are legal and taxed.

Banks are federally regulated, and the feds say marijuana is illegal and any financial institution working with marijuana money is potentially committing a RICO violation.

The laws need to change at the federal level. I agree with you that the forced use of cash at these businesses leaves them vulnerable.

no, what we need is to change the ridiculous laws restricting these perfectly legal businesses to cash ony transactions – it needlessly puts the employees in harms way and makes these perfectly legal businesses targets for the scumbag thieves…

Street preacher? Do you mean the Black Hebrews? They’re the only ones I’ve seen preaching at the intersection that is mentioned in this article and they are extremely racist. The victim said he thought he was targeted because of his religious affiliation. Can you tell us more? I feel a lot being hidden in this blurb.

I have only ever seen Black Hebrew Israelites there too. And yes, they are virulent racists.

Why do progressive Seattleites put up with their hateful BS?
