‘Donut Worry, Be Happy’ — Vegan donut joint Dough Joy now open on Capitol Hill

Rejoice. One of those 22+ Capitol Hill and Central District food and drink joints to look forward to in 2022 has already arrived. Dough Joy is now open on Capitol Hill.

“After months and months of hard work getting this space together, we couldn’t be more proud of how the space came together and for each and every one of you to be able to enjoy it,” owners Sean Willis and Christopher Ballard wrote in an update about the new shop. “After starting on a food truck just 8 months ago, to where we are today, we know it wouldn’t have happened without all the support and love from the community, and we can’t wait to grow our amazing Dough Joy fam here in Capitol Hill.”

CHS reported here on the plans for the new vegan donut shop born out the original Dough Joy food truck business and in the E Pike space formerly home to Old School Frozen Custard.

With its grand opening week, Dough Joy debuts with a Thursday through Sunday schedule and 8 AM openings with doughnuts available “until they sell out.”

“We don’t know when we’ll sell out in this new space, or how long it will take, but we are making more donuts than we ever have before so should be stocked up each day for you,” Dough Joy promises.

Flavors vary but recent choices included Vanilla Bean w/Sea Salt⁣⁣, Cookie Butta⁣⁣, Pear Cardamom, Peanut Butter Oreo⁣⁣, Chocoholic⁣⁣, Strawberry⁣⁣, Banana French Toast⁣⁣, Cinnyshugz⁣⁣, Basic B (Glazed)⁣⁣, and apple fritters. They also featured a special Birthday Cake edition for the shop’s soft opening last weekend.

Starting at $4 a pop, the pricing puts these round creations squarely in the Central Seattle artisanal donut rage.

On Capitol Hill, Dough Joy joins a vegan food and drink community including the first Frankie and Jo’s ice cream shop, 2019-born Life on Mars, and scene veteran Makini Howell’s 12th Ave joint Plum. And the Mighty-O chain took over the old High 5 Pie space in 2015 bringing its version of vegan donuts to the Hill only a few blocks from Dough Joy’s new joint.

The neighborhood’s donut scene was previously upgraded in October 2019 when Top Pot founder Michael Klebeck opened Half on Half on E Pike. More donut goodness is coming to the area. The Central District’s Raised Doughnuts will move into the new Midtown Square development when the mixed-use project completes construction and opens soon.

The new Dough Joy space boasts a new custom-built counter and donut display case, a full “100% plant-based coffee bar” with beans from Fulcrum Coffee Roasters, plus floors made with “a gorgeous white and pink marbled epoxy,” custom neon lighting on the back wall, and a new mural.

Dough Joy is now open at 1316 E Pike. You can learn more at doughjoydonuts.com.
