Man found shot in chest New Year’s Eve at 23rd and Union

Police investigated a Central District shooting part of a spate of New Year’s gun violence across the city.

According to the SPD brief on the December 31st incident and witness reports, a man approached security at the Uncle Ike’s bottle shop around 6:35 PM and said he had been shot several blocks from the location.

Officers reported the man had been shot in the chest. Seattle Fire was called to the scene to treat the 38-year-old man and rush him to Harborview.

It was not clear if SPD was able to establish where the shooting had taken place.

There were no reported arrests.

According to SPD, the shooting was one of three the night of New Year’s Eve including a man who arrived at Harborview with a gunshot wound to his leg around 1 AM and a man shot in the shoulder inside a Pioneer Square nightclub around 1:35 AM.

There have been increasing community calls for action amid ongoing gun violence in the Central District in 2021. CHS reported here on a December meeting with Garfield High School officials and Seattle Police representatives including Chief Adrian Diaz about measures being taken after a shooting left shell casings scattered across a campus parking lot. Garfield Principal Dr. Tarance Hart detailed increased security measures being planned while also emphasizing that social issues and economic equity must also be addressed. “There’s a lot of needs that aren’t about security,” Dr. Hart said. “This is a systemic issue, we need to talk about how to solve those issues.”
