24 units planned for 14th and Howell

Wednesday night will bring an opportunity for public feedback on the design proposal for a new, 50,000-square-foot grocery store, about market rate 400 apartment units, some new, smaller retail spaces, and an underground parking lot for about 350 cars on the 15th Ave site of the Capitol Hill Safeway.

It’s also the last chance to weigh in on a smaller project nearby at 14th and Howell.

At only 24 units, a five-story building proposed for 14th and Howell is undergoing an administrative design review and Wednesday is the deadline for public comment on the plan.

The project from a small real estate investment firm and Public47 Architects would replace the 11-unit, 1957-built apartment building currently at the corner. It was purchased by the real estate investment group for $3.6 million in 2018 according to county records.

The proposed development would rise five stories and include 24 market-rate units. No on-site parking is planned. Much of the public comment submitted to date has focused on the lack of parking, an element the design review process doesn’t typically address given the city’s cut of parking requirements near areas served by transit in 2018.
