When it was first opened the Melrose Trail had steel posts in the middle of the entrances at each end, to block cars going down there. I bicycle commuted there daily, and regularly encountered the steel posts very bent! After a while the steel posts disappeared: I guess SDOT got tired of replacing them. And yes, I did encounter confused motorists part way down the trail on several occasions after the steel posts had disappeared.
