After 11 years in the Central District, Hollow Earth Radio has hit the road in search of a new home

CHS reported here on the plans for nonprofit Photographic Center Northwest to be part of the mixed-use redevelopment of the property it owns at 12th and Marion in a rare example of a Capitol Hill arts organization owning and controlling its own real estate destiny.

On the other end of that dial, Seattle’s community-run Hollow Earth online and Low Power FM radio station has left is Central District birthplace to start 2022 and is searching for a new home.

“After a conversation with the landlord about the lease, their needs, and what they were looking for, it was not going to work out,” spokesperson Genevieve Green told CHS about leaving E Union last month.

Hollow Earth’s antenna is still broadcasting under an agreement with the building’s owner

With its DJs and hosts already transitioned to a rather nomadic existence by COVID-19, Hollow Earth has now left is E Union studio neighboring 20/20 Cycles and is run remotely by it community of volunteers. Its KHUH low powered broadcasting continues at 104.9 FM, for now, with equipment installed at the E Union site in 2017. But that, too, will eventually need to be moved.

Hollow Earth has been part of the neighborhood for more than 11 years.

Green says the hope is to find a fellow arts organization “focused on social inclusion and diversity” to team up with on a new Hollow Earth studio, performance space, and broadcast facility. Hopefully, the station will stay in Seattle. But city limits aren’t a barrier to finding the right new home.

“Our doors are very much wide open,” Green said.

In the meantime, Hollow Earth is raising funds to help cover the costs of its remote existence and to help find a new home. Later this month, fellow broadcaster Capitol Hill live music venue Cafe Racer will host a Hollow Earth benefit show typical of the station’s offerings — independent, eclectic, and all ages. You can purchase tickets here for the Friday, February 25th show.

Learn more and tune in at hollowearthradio.org or 104.9 FM if you live within about three miles of 21st and Union.
