Shhhh! Don’t Yell At Me bubble tea shop lined up to neighbor Dick’s Drive-in on Broadway

As Dick’s remains closed for its first major overhaul since its 1954 opening, the much-loved burger joint is also preparing for a new neighbor.

Plans for a second Seattle location of the stylish international bubble tea chain Don’t Yell At Me are in motion that will add the shop to the Broadway drive-in’s block in the mixed-use Hollywood Flats development.

Early permitting indicates a 1,600-square-foot space being prepared for the chain’s bubble tea hangout’s stark stylings. Created by Taiwanese celebrity Yako Chan, the chain has grown from Taiwan, to include Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and Malaysia. It opened its first United States location in the U District in 2020 and added a second in Kirkland last summer.

As for the wacky name, Don’t Yell At Me is reportedly part of a quote summing up Chan’s “life philosophy” and, perhaps, deeper thoughts about celebrity:

I like sincerity, dislike pretentiousness, but I’d never say, ‘Don’t yell at me’.

Don’t Yell At Me is the second bubble tea project to file plans for Broadway in recent weeks. CHS reported here on the plans for a new Timeless Tea location on the north end of the street.

The Hollywood Lofts opened six years ago as a six-story loft-style apartment project incorporating the brick store and office building that stood at the site since 1929 and was home to the neighborhood’s Hollywood Video rental chain. A Zoom Care clinic, the company’s second on the street, had operated in the redeveloped building but has since shuttered.

Next door, Dick’s is planned to open with new windows and new infrastructure by spring with plans, the company says, for its food truck to visit the site for a pop-up every now and then during construction.

You can expect to be able to grab a Deluxe and stop in for a Don’t Yell At Me later this year at 125 Broadway E. Learn more at en.dontyellatme.com.

Why there? There’s already 4 different stand-alone bubble tea places within a stones throw: Hi Tea Cafe at Broadway & John, that one boba place at Harvard and Pike, Oasis Tea Zone further down on Pine, and Bobachu up at 15th and Pine. Bring some Boba to places that need it, like the CD (23rd and Jackson, perhaps?) or further south.

HAHA another bubble tea place. I love bubble tea, but how many do we need at the current rate everyone on capitol hill would need to drink 5 a day to keep them all in business. How about a frozen yogurt shop!

I’ve never been to a bubble tea place and it not been absolutely hopping. I don’t understand the objections.
