  • Rock throwing arrest: Seattle Police say they used “less lethal” munitions to end a 30-minute standoff with a man suffering a mental crisis and reported throwing rocks at a nearby building and officers early Tuesday morning near 14th and E Madison. According to the SPD brief on the incident and East Precinct radio reports, the man was reported to be “possibly nude” and throwing rocks at the Chloe on Madison apartment building around 1:15 AM. Arriving officers reported the man was threatening pedestrians with rocks and was also throwing rocks at windows of the building:

When they contacted him he was hostile towards them. Officers remained at a distance, and he began throwing large rocks at officers who took cover behind a dumpster. The subject also struck two patrol vehicles with the rocks during the incident.

SPD says officers formed a “contact team with riot shields as additional cover” and “eventually deployed a 40mm launcher when the subject refused to follow orders to drop the rocks.” The crowd control weapon “was effective,” SPD says, reporting the man started running before he was apprehended and booked into jail for assault and property damage including damage to a police vehicle at the scene. Seattle Fire was called to evaluate the man as he was taken into custody.

  • Broadway knife threat: Police were called early Monday to a report of a person with a gun threatening to shoot a man armed with a butcher knife in a disturbance on Broadway. According to the SPD brief, police arrived and took the victim into custody in the 2:30 AM incident while officers sorted out what happened. Police say the victim told officers they were walking home near Broadway and Denny when the suspect approached with a large butcher knife and started chasing them. “The victim produced a legally owned and carried firearm in self-defense and the suspect ran off,” SPD reports. There were no reports of shots fired. Police searched the area for the suspect armed with the knife but were not successful. There were no reported serious injuries.

WTF, SPD?

Geez, there seem to be an awful lot of stabbings and people with large knives running around the same small part of the neighborhood. What are the odds it’s all the same person? We’ll never know, since SPD doesn’t seem to feel the need to inform the public of any details.

Riot shields and a impact launcher seems like kind of an overreaction to a guy throwing rocks but I suppose we should be glad they didn’t just shoot him. Hope he gets the help he needs.

Not being sarcastic. What should they have done? Calmly approach and ask him to come with the nice men to the padded room? Guy is throwing rocks at windows, isn’t responsive to communication, shields seem appropriate.

I wonder how many times the police have been called for “the butcher knife guy,” as we call him in my house? He strolls around Capitol Hill carrying a butcher knife ALL THE TIME, sometimes and sometimes not yelling n-word profanities, and is scary as F. Everyone, watch out for this person. I’m afraid he’ll stab someone before the city takes him seriously.
