Big police response to Melrose and Pine as man reportedly shoots himself in hand amid nightlife crowds

The area falls outside of the new emphasis patrol area downtown but last call at a Capitol Hill club brought a large Seattle Police presence to the area around Pine and Melrose early Sunday after a man reportedly shot himself in the hand.

According to East Precinct radio reports and witnesses, police rushed to the area just before 2 AM Sunday after a 911 caller reported a dispute and threats of gun violence in the 1500 block of Pine.

Seattle Police reportedly formed a line to control movement on Pine and to break up the crowds forming in the area as the nearby Mint Lounge emptied but found no evidence of shots fired, and there were no reported injuries or arrests at the scene.

According to police, a victim showed up at the nearby Swedish First Hill around 1:54 AM with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the hand but left before officers arrived.

The shooting follows another bout of gun violence in the area around Melrose and Pine last month that left shattered glass and bullet holes.

More officers were already in the area at the time of the shooting as SPD has rolled out its increased presence only a few blocks away downtown as part of a renewed “hot spot” policing strategy hoped to quiet ongoing waves of violent crime and street disorder in the city.

More shootings because of Club Mint. Gun activity has increase since that club has been remodeled into a hip hop club.

Same as it ever was. It isn’t that it’s a hip hop club. Other places around here spin hip hop regularly. People have shot each other at and around this place for decades. Needed to be shut down a looong time ago.

It was great in the late 90s/early 2000s. I used to hang out there all the time. It wasn’t until turned into more of an electronic dance club that the shootings began. I mean, it used to be a swing dance club, and then it had lots of Brit pop/indie nights. I miss the old space.

I will try again. It is a shame we have so many guns. It is also a shame that some people who insist on carrying them are so inept that they shoot themselves in the hand….or any other part of their body.

Thanks again to blaming SPD for not being able to send more than 40 officers to Mint tonight. It is definitely SPD’s fault that those patrons keep trying to kill each other while shooting randomly into apartment buildings. Definitely need to defund policing Gangbang events. SFD though, will need more funding, body bags are not free.
