CHS Pics | A 25,000 investment blooms in Volunteer Park

Thanks to the folks at the Volunteer Park Trust for sharing these images of the daffodil bloom that has filled many corners of the 48.3-acre Capitol Hill green space.

CHS reported in fall on the effort to plant 25,000 daffodil bulbs in the park in honor of longtime volunteer Doug Bayley. Bayley passed away in January. His daffodils are now putting on a show in blankets of golds and yellows.

In 2012, CHS reported on Bayley and the formation of the Volunteer Park Trust group to help care for and shape the now more than 120-year-old park.

The bulbs were planted by trust volunteers during an October work party and the flowers, the group says, fit well with the legacy of the public space. “Flowering bulbs—and daffodils in particular—have long been a component in historic Olmsted-designed landscapes across the country and provide a welcome burst of bright, seasonal color,” according to the trust.

The flowers join a park still recovering from construction projects. Progress with the cement workers strike should mean the project to repair pavement in front of the Seattle Asian Art Museum could finally be wrapped up. And major construction on the $3 million amphitheater replacement project to create a new outdoor performance facility with a roof, storage and green room space, all-gender bathrooms, upgraded electrical access, and “a resilient floor” is done with only final touches including landscape work left to complete.
