Driver uninjured but taken for a ride as downtown carjacking ends with crash and arrest on Capitol Hill

Thanks to a CHS reader for this picture of the crash scene

A chaotic downtown carjacking ended with a crash into the Starbucks Roastery and an arrest on Capitol Hill Tuesday afternoon. Meanwhile, a reported stabbing near the scene where the car was boosted was not related to the theft, police said.

According to SPD, police were called to the reported stabbing near 3rd and Union around 2:20 PM but could not immediately locate a victim. During a check of the area, officers reported a black Lexus take off at a high rate of speed with someone’s legs hanging from the window as they dove into the vehicle.

SPD says officers began pursuing the vehicle up Pike where the driver crashed and the vehicle came to a rest against the Starbucks Roastery just before Melrose Ave. A large contingent of SPD vehicles converged on the scene and the suspected carjacker was quickly taken into custody.

Police found the vehicle’s owner inside the car. Police say the owner told them he was picking up a ride share trip and loading customer luggage into the hatch downtown when the the carjacker entered the vehicle and began to speed way. The driver apparently leapt through the open window where he rode the chase out after diving in as the Lexus was being stolen.

Police and Seattle Fire say both the suspect and the ride share driver were not seriously injured in the crash.

The original stabbing victim was eventually located downtown. Seattle Fire reports the man did not have life threatening injuries and declined to be transported to the hospital.
