Details in this report have not yet been confirmed by Seattle Police.
The incident began with the reported stabbing around 11:30 Sunday night that sent a 66-year-old victim to the hospital from the 100-block Melrose Ave E building with a minor hand injury, Seattle Fire reports.
According to East Precinct and SWAT radio updates, the suspect returned to her unit after the reported 11:30 PM stabbing and refused to come out from the fifth floor apartment of the Seattle Housing Authority building as police arrived and made contact.
Police transitioned the standoff with the reportedly armed suspect to a SWAT operation and moved heavy equipment including a Bearcat armored vehicle onto Melrose near E Denny Way as police moved into place inside and around the building and cleared nearby units preparing for a raid of the suspect’s apartment.
According to radio updates, the suspect was in contact with negotiators by phone and, just before 2 AM, told police she was tired and going to bed so she could go to work in the morning. By that time, a search warrant had been approved, and SWAT officers prepared to enter the apartment.
Around 2:20 AM, at least one loud bang was reported in the area as police detonated an explosive inside the building as they prepared to entered the unit. Just before 3 AM, SWAT reported the suspect was in custody. A gurney was ordered to the unit to help remove the struggling suspect and transport her for from the scene.
There were no further significant injuries reported.

The level of reaction by SPD seems frankly insane and unproductive, unless there is something we do not know. An armored car??? I have been in situations like these (as an EMT) and yes one cop or two is helpful, but this was a job for social workers. I am glad the situation did not escalate to gunfire or self harm.
She stabbed someone, bro ….
I totally agree that the armored car and probably the explosives that I’m guessing were used to breach the door are crazy. But, no social worker was required, this was a person who just attacked someone else with a knife and needed to be arrested.
Is it because they were a woman that makes you feel that way? What would a “social worker” even do in this situation? They are more suited to handcuff her? Or are you suggesting that she need not be charged with any crime and that it’s ok for people to settle disputes by attacking others with weapons?
This is wild – she was in contact with them and let them know she was going to sleep. Then their search warrant came through after 2am and they used explosives to breach her home? Why not wait a few hours and pick her up when she left for work? Or find her employer and arrest her there. I feel bad for everyone involved here, including the landlord and neighbors who are dealing with property damage and explosives in their building.
If someone stabbed you, would you feel OK with police responding by letting them get a good night’s sleep? You’d feel OK with putting other all the people in her building at risk, given that she is clearly a threat to others and herself?
