  • SCC lockdown: The paramilitary appearance of a private guard reportedly providing security during a cash pickup at the nearby Walgreens set off concerns and a brief lockdown at Seattle Central College Friday afternoon. According to an update from the school posted to Twitter, the lockdown happened around 12:20 PM after school security received a report of “an armed individual wearing military fatigues” near the Walgreens on E Pine and Broadway. According to the update, SCC security contacted Walgreens and “learned the individual was an armored guard hired to handle their cash transfers” and the school’s lockdown was lifted. Seattle Police were also called to reports of man suffering a possible mental crisis and behaving erratically in the area at the time, complicating the response.
  • Broadway bank heist: The suspect in a Broadway bank robbery made off with $1,000 cash after handing over a note threatening he had a gun and a bomb in a hold-up last Wednesday afternoon. According to East Precinct radio updates, the suspect pulled off the heist around 3:45 PM at the Chase bank in the 300 block of the busy Capitol Hill artery and quickly fled on foot from the area. According to police, the suspect entered the bank and approached a teller asking to open a bank account. The teller reportedly told the suspect it was too late and to come back tomorrow when the man covered in a green hat and surgical mask demanded the cash. Police say the man matches the description of the suspect in another similar recent heist. Seattle Police searched the area but were not successful. There no reported injuries.
  • Knife threats arrest: Areas around 12th and Jefferson were told to lock down during a police response Thursday just after noon to reports of a man threatening people with a knife:
The subject did not obey commands and took off running from officers while armed with the knife. While following the suspect, officers had to yell out at pedestrians to alert them of the dangerous situation. Eventually, the suspect stopped at the intersection of E Jefferson ST and 12 AV E and engaged with officers. A contact team was formed with 40mm less lethal launcher, TASER, CRT, HNT, and various patrol units. Verbal de-escalation was unsuccessful, and the suspect attempted to leave while still armed with the knife, continuing to endanger the public. A 40mm launcher was deployed successfully and officers were able to take the suspect into custody without the incident escalating any further. After the arrest, the suspect threatened to kick an officer in the throat once he got out of handcuffs.
Police say Seattle Fire was called to the scene to screen the suspect and he was transported to Harborview with a hospital guard for medical evaluation. Police said the suspect would be booked for two counts of felony harassment and one count of unlawful use of weapon after clearance from the hospital.

  • Carjacking suspects wanted: An early morning string of carjackings included an armed hold-up on First Hill. SPD is looking for the suspects:
At 12:05 AM on Wednesday, the three suspects approached a man at a gas station in the 3800 block of Rainier Avenue South, pointed guns at the man, and stole his minivan. As the suspects drove away in the stolen van, they ripped the still-attached gas hose from the pump, striking the victim and knocking him to the ground. Detectives believe the same suspects approached a man late Wednesday evening, just before 11 p.m., as he was getting out of his car at 13th Avenue South and South Judkins Street. The suspects pointed guns at the victim and demanded the keys to his vehicle. The suspects stole the car but were apparently unable to drive the victim’s manual transmission and fled, leaving the running vehicle behind. Just under an hour later, the suspects approached a man in a parking lot in the 600 block of 9th Avenue, pointed a handgun at him, and stole his phone, wallet, and SUV.
Police said they were able to obtain security images from the gas station incident and asked for help finding the three suspects. If you have any information, contact the SPD Robbery Unit at (206) 684-5535.
