Traffic still roars through Montlake but the neighborhood is regaining spaces to pull over and enjoy a quieter moment — or better yet, walk in, and grab a few bagels.

Turns out, the name of the new Sea Wolf Bakery project CHS first reported on back in summer of 2020 is Oxbow — perhaps a reference to the rounding curve of busy 24th Ave through Montlake where crews tenaciously work on to create the new freeway lid over 520 and reshape this busy transportation and transit interchange. Montlake’s road diet won’t ever really happen — but there have been changes hoped to make the area safer for drivers, pedestrians, and bikers. Meanwhile, the city’s school zone speeding cameras continues to dole out tickets at record pace.

Hopefully your own diet has room for baked goodness including bagels, special breads, and, eventually, pizza.

Sea Wolf’s expansion to Montlake has created a new bakery and cafe for the growing company in the space left empty when Capitol Hill gay bar ex pat Purr shuttered in Montlake in 2018. The new bakery and cafe was designed by Heliotrope to achieve the openness and light of the Stone Way original, Jesse Schumann told CHS.

In addition to its original Stone Way bakery and cafe, Sea Wolf provides bread and baked goods to a growing roster of small grocers, and cafes and restaurants across Seattle.

Schumann started baking professionally more than a decade ago after attending the San Francisco Baking Institute. He started Sea Wolf with his brother Kit Schumann to bring creativity into baking with local and organic ingredients.

Oxbow provides a new venue for that creativity “serving quiche, coffee, bagels, breads, spreads, other humble offerings.” Pizza will reportedly join the offerings.

Any Italian flavored dablings, we’re sure, will have the blessing of Oxbox neighbor Cafe Lago which is now marking more than 30 years in Montlake. Meanwhile, for those stuck on the other side of the flowing Montlake river of 24th Ave cars, the neighborhood’s Fuel Coffee has been overhauled as part of the ownership change and new look that also transformed its 19th Ave E cousin. By the way, you can also find Sea Wolf baked goods at Fuel locations, now.

While Oxbow has lots of space for hanging out, for now, Sea Wolf has decided to keep things takeout only at this stage in the pandemic. But soon the cafe will be ready to provide that space to sit down for a minute, get out of the Montlake flow, and enjoy some baked creativity.
