Police search for injured passenger after reportedly accidentally shoots self in leg aboard Metro bus

Police were searching for a passenger who reportedly accidently shot himself in the leg aboard a Metro Route 8 bus and fled the scene near 23rd and John Thursday afternoon.

Emergency crews and Seattle Police were called to the area just after 4 PM but the Seattle Fire units were quickly canceled as a search for the injured person continued.

According to SPD and Seattle Fire radio updates, the emergency response at 23rd and John shifted a mile south about ten minutes later to 22nd Ave near E Cherry where a patient in a “scenes of violence” response, Seattle Fire’s category of responses for shootings and stabbings, was underway.

Metro says the passenger was on a Route 8 bus eastbound on 23rd at John when the gun was fired. “The driver of the coach opened the doors and allowed passengers to exit the bus, and the shooter left the coach with the other passengers,” a Metro statement reads.

No other injuries were reported.

Seattle Fire transported the patient to Harborview with a leg injury. We do not yet have information on his condition at this time.

UPDATE: The King County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the shooting took place aboard a Metro coach and says the passenger was located by SPD near 22nd and Cherry where he received medical attention and was transported to Harborview. KCSO’s Transit Police has jurisdiction for incidents involving the county public transportation fleet.

I think people should care because the guy was trying to flag down a bunch of students who were trying to board the bus from the exit.
