With a move to the park’s ‘north meadow,’ movies in the park return to Cal Anderson

We all deserve movies in the park

A rite of summer is ready to return to Capitol Hill. Somewhere along the way, we decided movies in the park needed to be put on hold. This week, the tradition returns to Cal Anderson but with some changes including a new location in the park for the show.

Friday night, Seattle Parks and Recreation will host a movie in the park screening of To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. Yes, you’ve already seen it. But have you watched it outside with a big crowd on a 72 F Capitol Hill night?

Parks is encouraging attendees to “dress to impress!” and advises bringing chairs, blankets and snacks.

Gone, for now, are the days of the Three Dollar Bill Cinema concession stand when the Capitol Hill nonprofit hosted the park’s annual summer outdoor movie series. It has remained busy with the return of in-person attendance at its 2022 Seattle Queer Film Festival. Three Dollar is also co-presenting a showing of the documentary LA: A Queer Story on July 30th at the Broadway Performance Hall. Meanwhile, its outdoor cinema efforts this year are focused on events beyond the Hill including an August 28th presentation of Purple Rain in the Central District’s Jimi Hendrix Park.

The Black Lives Memorial Garden when it sprouted in 2020

Meanwhile, back in Cal Anderson, the use of the park as an outdoors movie venue will include a big shift. The screening will take place in what the parks department is calling the “north meadow” on the end of the park along Denny near the AIDS Memorial Pathway and Capitol Hill Station. The previous screening location is now home to the Black Lives Memorial Garden, a community gardening effort that grew out of the CHOP occupied protest and is maintained by the Black Star Farmers group.
