Capitol Hill, Seattle’s White House is for sale

Capitol Hill, Seattle’s White House is up for grabs. Communications executive and neighborhood political mover and shaker Roger Nyhus is, well, moving and leaving his 1906-built Capitol Hill mansion behind.

“The four-story home features a parlor, entertaining space, expansive kitchen, half-floor primary bedroom,” the listing site boasts. “Highlights include a secret room concealed behind a bookcase inspired by Young Frankenstein, a full-floor office on the third floor with four private offices, an outdoor deck, built-in fiber and expansive views.”

“The White House is a true entertainer’s home,” it concludes.

The price? $5.975 million.

The 7,000-square-foot home with a four-car garage at the corner of 12th Ave E and E Aloha just south of Volunteer Park rises with a view to the west along the curve of the street. The prominent “Beaux Arts – Neoclassical” style mansion has been home for Nyhus and also host to parties and political events over the years. Friend and Capitol Hill resident Ed Murray launched his successful campaign for mayor there in 2017. Nyhus, meanwhile, has been busy building Nyhus Communications into a leading “marketing, advertising, branding and public relations” firm in Seattle.

He also has been involved in nearby development including neighborhood pushback that limited this E Aloha project.

His political connections will now take Nyhus off Capitol Hill and out of the city. Earlier this month, President Joe Biden named the Democratic strategist as ambassador to Barbados, the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda, the Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. It sounds like a good gig.

“Nyhus has served as a trusted adviser to business, government, and nonprofit leaders around the world, including CEOs of Fortune 500 companies,” the biography included in the announcement of his appointment reads. “During his career, he also was the longest-serving Communications Director for Washington Governor Gary Locke, a Senior Advocacy Officer for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and Communications Director for Seattle Mayor Paul Schell.”

Nyhus originally purchased the house with partner Rod Hearne in 2007 for $1.6 million, according to King County. The couple had their domestic partnership dissolved in 2013 and Nyhus ended up with the house in the settlement, according to court records.

In a message posted this week to social media, Nyhus called the planned sale of his Capitol Hill house “a positive sign of the times.”

“The Seattle White House is seeking new owners/stewards,” he said.
