Fighting words: Capitol Hill’s T’Juana Tacos has claim to the best tacos in Seattle

The Pork Belly Tacos

With reporting by Alex Garland

Debating the best taco on Capitol Hill? That’s going to get you into an argument. The whole city? Fistfight. But an argument can be made and, maybe, a fistfight won over T’Juana Tacos, the counter joint inside Capitol Hill’s Nacho Borracho slushy margarita bar that continues to punch above its weight class with surprise “best tacos” victories.

As T’Juana is ready to celebrate its Día de Muertos one-year anniversary next week, Monica Rodriguez is touting her first place win at TacoLibre Fall.

“The food I make, it’s what I grew up with for the most part and, of course, I love food,” Rodriguez tells CHS. “So I put a twist to, you know, my family recipes.”

A twist is useful in this kind of heated contest.

Rodriguez put together a special new menu item to help put T’Juana over the top with voters with a pork belly taco smothered in “ancho-bacon-agave glaze,” served on an “heirloom blue corn” tortilla and topped with cilantro, habanero salsa and pickled red onions.

Now that taco has joined T’Juana already feared quesabirria tacos as a champion in the city. And you, taco champ, can enjoy them every night on Broadway while the rest of the world has to search the city for the T’Juana taco truck.

CHS reported here on T’Juana Tacos joining the Nacho Borracho faux — falsa? — Mexican dive bar last November. Rodriguez took over the Nacho kitchen with the business first shaped by farmers markets and food trucks. “Seven days a week,” Rodriguez says, “Late night eats. Kitchen closes at 12:30 AM. Every day, guys.”

Next week, T’Juana Tacos will mark Day of the Dead with a one-year birthday party and free dessert while supplies last.

T’Juana Tacos is located inside Nacho Borracho at 209 Broadway E. Learn more at tjuanatacos.com.

Any sort of so-called “elevated” taco isn’t as good as traditional – an excuse to charge like $5 per taco.
