Downtown tunnel work means no light rail service between Capitol Hill and SoDo over Veterans Day weekend

Work in the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel will mean no light rail service over the Veterans Day weekend between Capitol Hill and SoDo.

Sound Transit says the service disruption will take place Friday, November 11th through Sunday, November 13th with trains expected to return to this portion of the line by Monday morning.

Officials say riders should allow up to an additional 30 minutes for their trips if they plan to make use of the shuttle buses that will be in place:

During this time, Sound Transit will provide replacement shuttle buses to transport passengers. The buses will run approximately every 15 minutes and stop at all stations between Capitol Hill and SODO. Passengers should plan ahead and allow for extra time for transfers between buses and trains or seek alternative transit options that may better suit their needs. During the tunnel closure, work crews will section the overhead catenary system (OCS), which provides power to the light rail vehicles, into quadrants. At present, any work on the tunnel’s OCS requires the entire tunnel to be closed. By dividing the OCS into quadrants, any future work would only affect a portion of the tunnel, reducing the overall impact on service.

ST says the maintenance will also include crews performing work needed to tie the future East Link extension into the existing system. The new line connecting Seattle to the Eastside with a stop at Judkins Park is expected to come online in the winter of 2024.

For this weekend, ST is recommending “alternative transit service during the disruption, especially for their Friday commute.”
