  • Union Market robbery: Police say the Madrona carjacking reported by CHS last week followed an armed hold-up of a neighborhood market and a police chase on the icy streets of the Central District as the suspect made his getaway despite the Sheriff’s helicopter circling for hours above the area. According to SPD, the Wednesday night incident began at 21st Ave’s Union Market where the suspect entered the store and robbed it at gunpoint, fleeing with a bag of cash and another handgun taken from the business. Police say the suspect jumped into a silver sedan and sped from the scene but officers in pursuit were forced to call off the chase due to the dangerous icy conditions. 911 reports of a crash at 34th and Union followed and SPD responded to the scene with a K9 unit to try to track down the suspect. As police responded, an armed carjacking was reported about 8 blocks north in Madrona. The vehicle taken in the carjacking was found a short time later crashed at 39th and Howell where the manhunt began with police on the ground and the Sheriff helicopter above unsuccessfully searching the area near the shores of Lake Washington for the suspect. There were no reported significant injuries and no arrests have been reported.
  • Montlake sword arrest: A man believed to be suffering a mental health or drug crisis was knocked down by a less-lethal weapon and taken into custody Sunday night after he allegedly attacked a police vehicle with a sword, smashed another car’s window, and tried to break into a nearby residence:

At 10:23 p.m., officers responded to 24th Avenue East and East Galer Street for reports of a man walking in the street with a sword. When police arrived in the area, the man suddenly approached an officer in a police car and struck the driver’s door with his sword — damaging the vehicle but thankfully leaving the officer unharmed. The man was in a state of crisis and refused to comply with officers’ demands to drop the sword. Instead, he walked away from police and broke the windshield of a car parked on the block. Officers followed the man and continued to instruct him to drop the sword. But the man continued to ignore commands, and damaged the door of a house with the weapon. When the suspect then tried to open the door of the occupied house, officers deployed a 40 mm launcher. The man dropped the sword, and officers moved in to arrest him.

Police say the 43-year-old was taken to Harborview Medical Center for evaluation and that the man would be booked into the King County Jail for property damage, attempted burglary and assault. Officers also requested charges for the misdemeanor offenses of obstruction and unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon, SPD says.

  • Harvard knife attack: Police are looking for assistance identifying the suspect in what is believed to have been a random knife attack on a passerby on Harvard Ave E last week:
Attempt to Identify Subject. On 12/19/2022 at around 9:30 AM, an unknown subject attacked a victim in an unprovoked and random attack with a knife. This occurred at Harvard Ave E. near E. Olive Way (E. John St.).

The subject approached a lone victim and slashed at her with a knife. Thankfully, while the knife penetrated her jacket, the victim was unharmed. The subject may have been having a mental health crisis as he was muttering unintelligible “gibberish.”

The subject is described as follows:

    WM, 40-50 y/o
5-06, 150 pounds, described as thin
    Described as very dirty
Carhart type jacket, classic Carhart brown/tan/rust colored
Shoulder length dirty looking brown or blonde hair.

“If anyone has seen this person or experienced something similar, please let us know,” East Precinct commander Capt. Eric Sano said in the community bulletin. “Our Crisis Intervention Team can respond and assist.”

That description of the knife slasher fits 2/3 mentally ill people on the Hill. It certainly sounds like the almost-always shoeless, occasionally naked, Jesus-type guy, but he seems to be fairly harmless, and I’ve never seen him with a knife.
