This weekend, Standard Brewing turns 10 making the S Jackson brewery the eldest of the modern class of Central District and Capitol Hill beer makers.

Standard is celebrating with a “10 year banger” —

How did this happen?! Most of you never got to see us incubate in the back corner of our building. It seems pretty wild now to think about how we got our start, with a bunch of ramshackle equipment and duct tape. For those of you that remember our building being yellow and purple, with double deep parking spaces and a bar with space for 8, it seems like a lifetime ago. For all of you, and for everyone that has been a supporter over this hectic decade, March 18th and 19th is for you!

The weekend will include live music and special releases including a bourbon barrel-aged stout with Broadcast Coffee, a “Bee’s Wine” ginger beer, and a special “fermented pineapple” tepache beverage, along with guest bartenders and more surprises.

We were there in 2013 when founder and CD resident Justin Gerardy he made the big leap from homebrew to pro in the small-batch brewery at 25th and Jackson. The former manager at at the Hideout and Vito’s said at the time he enjoyed the “limitations of being small” — “I enjoy experimenting.”

Ten years later, Standard has grown and expanded but remains a true microbrewery. It also now is part of a beer-y Central District community. Métier, one of the only black-owned breweries in the nation under co-founder, CEO, and Central District resident Rodney Hines, opened its new taproom on E Cherry last summer. Meanwhile on S Jackson, more black-made beer has joined the mix with 23rd Ave Brewery.

Standard also has a brotherhood with its younger Capitol Hill indie brewing cousins at Outer Planetborn 2015 — on 12th Ave, and the sprawling auto row-boned Optimism Brewinganother 2015 birthday — on Union at Broadway.

With soaring real estate costs and high demand for housing driving continued redevelopment, it’s not clear if a new generation of CD and Hill beer makers will come along anytime soon. For now, celebrate the ones we have including the 10-year-old that led the way at 25th and Jackson.

Standard Brewing is located at 2504 S Jackson. Learn more at standardbrew.com.
