On the List | Gearhouse grand opening, Lost Lake 10th birthday, Bike Everywhere Day, Malcolm X Day, I-5 detours, and the Seattle Day of Service

Here is a look at things to get out and do around Capitol Hill this weekend from the CHS Calendar… and beyond. Check out capitolhillseattle.com/calendar/ for more nearby events — or add your own. Happy weekend.

  • Gearhouse Grand Opening: Thursday night brings a free party at the new Gearhouse where you can check out the outdoor equipment library and sign up for a raffle for free prizes plus enjoy treats from the Basecamp Cafe. 800 E Thomas — Thursday, May 18th 6-9 PM
  • Lost Lake 10th anniversary celebration begins: The Capitol Hill diner’s celebration of a decade starts with a 10th birthday party Thursday with balloon animals and bear costumes. 1505 10th Ave — Thursday, May 18th 3-7 PM
  • Glo’s first weekend: It is also the first weekend of full service at the new Glo’s.
  • Bike Everywhere Day: Friday is Bike Everywhere Day with events and stations lined up to greet riders across the city. Seattle Bike Blog has the 2023 BED map here.
  • Malcolm X Day: Celebrate the life and legacy of Malcolm X on his birthday at the CD’s Northwest African American Museum. 2300 Massachusetts Street — Friday, May 19th 6-7:30 PM
  • 2023 Beer Can Derby: Beer hall The Pine Box’s annual Beer Can Derby takes place Saturday when you can “relive your Pinewood Derby-filled scouting days by tricking out an aluminum can into a mean, lean, speed racing machine.” 1600 Melrose — Saturday, May 20th, 3-7 PM
  • True Crime and Tragedy in Victorian Seattle walking tour: Visit Capitol Hill’s Lake View Cemetery for a tour with Seattle History Tours. $25. 1554 15th Ave E — Sunday, May 21st, 11 AM to 12:30 PM
  • SIFF winds down: Seattle’s big film fest wraps up on Sunday. CHS reported on the 2023 festival and big news that the Cinerama theater would be joining the SIFF family including Capitol Hill’s Egyptian Theatre.
  • 2023 Seattle Day of Service: Championed by Mayor Bruce Harrell, Saturday brings the second annual service day event with volunteer opportunities across the city. Projects around Miller Community Center and 14th Ave’s AME Church are still in need of volunteers.
  • Mutual Aid Fair: The A Will & A Way group is hosting a Mutual Aid Fair in Cal Anderson with “community care, skillshares, and treats” on Sunday, May 21st.
  • I-5 detours: Watch out. Traffic around Seattle will be bananas this weekend. Details from WSDOT:
This weekend starting Friday night, travelers using northbound Interstate 5 through downtown Seattle will want to plan ahead for delays or consider adjusting their trips. Both northbound I-5 and the I-5 express lanes will intermittently close beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, May 19, through 10 a.m. Sunday, May 21.
WSDOT says the closures are needed to place girders over the interstate for a new flyover ramp connecting SR 520 to the express lanes. The planned detour route across Montlake is a doozy:
All traffic on northbound I-5 between Lakeview Boulevard and exit 168B to eastbound SR 520 will detour at SR 520 and use Montlake Boulevard and East Hamlin Street to turn around and enter westbound SR 520
