Monday is Inauguration Day in Washington D.C. — In the Central District, the day brings the MLK Day rally and march to Garfield High School. Organizers of the annual event to honor the life of the civil rights leader are fully embracing the contrast.
This year’s event from the volunteer-run MLK Jr Organizing Coalition is focused on the inauguration in D.C. with workshops and speakers addressing what is at risk.
“We Rise Against Project 2025” is the theme.
Project 2025 is an initiative first put forward by conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation championing right-wing policies to reshape federal government. It has grown into a buzzword capturing the elements of “MAGA” and then some. Its includes attacks on social programs and pillars like the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Monday, as Donald Trump again takes the oath of office in an icy cold Washington D.C., workshops and an opportunity fair will take place at Garfield before the 11 AM rally in the school’s gym, followed by the march through the streets of the Central District to downtown.
Monday is a school holiday in Seattle and many students typically take part in the MLK Day events and march.
The spirit of King in Seattle has made room for the nation’s most pressing issues over the years. In 2024, CHS reported on the calls for a ceasefire in Gaza that were part of the celebration and march.
Monday will be part of a busy weekend of marches in Seattle. On Saturday, People’s March Seattle from the Women’s March organizers will step off from Cal Anderson Park. Eight years ago, the demonstrations against the Trump presidency brought tens of thousands of people to the streets of Seattle.

Show up to that rally and you gonna end up on a watch list!
Have you been to this before? It’s a community education and resource fair followed by a family friendly rally and march. Lots of great energy channeling the positive tension that Dr King called for.
Don’t care! It’s a protest and it’s gonna be watched heavily.
Let’s hope so. A protest that isn’t seen might as well not have happened.
I won’t watch it.
Eh, regarding the Women’s March, what’s the point? I flew to DC to protest the last Trump Presidency and it accomplished nothing. This time I feel like, if those groups most effected by a 2nd Trump Presidency couldn’t be bothered to vote because they truly felt that the Dems were just as bad, then why should I bother to care on their behalf? Let them feel the effects of what they did. If the farmers and working poor think a guy who is literally surrounding himself with the three richest men in America on Monday truly cares about the working class or poor, that’s kind of on them now, isn’t it?
Yeah, forget about the children and everyone else, let’s go back to that minority rule thing that was working so well before
Exactly. Bingo. 100 percent. And I’ll say it again: Did you not vote or vote for Jill Stein? Have fun with the horrors we will be seeing with Trump 2.0. Get an effin clue how politics actually work maybe.
Project 2025 is coming for us all…time to organize and fight back against white supremacy!
