Timothy takes portraits of people who fascinate him. He is easily fascinated so that means almost everyone that comes in contact with him. You can find more of his pictures here & can contact him at [email protected]
What were TacocaT’s biggest moments of 2013 and resolutions for 2014?
Our best moment of 2013 was: recording a full-length album called NVM. We also played the Comet a few days before it closed and met a bodybuilder there, we learned that leggings sometimes ARE pants, and discovered that the true meaning of Christmas is Mariah Carey. Our collective New Year’s Resolution is to tour this spring in a replica of the Spice Girls tour van from the movie Spice World.
What are a few last minute Christmas gifts shoppers can find at Glasswing?
1. Glasswing Candles, in our favorite fall scents: Vanilla Cedarwood, Mandarin Orange Ginger and Honey Milk Pumpkin Spice. $16 and will warm up any home!
2. Apolis Market Tote, $68. Glasswing is home to Seattle’s first market tote. Beautiful veggie tanned leather handles and fully lined! Would be great gift filled with someone’s favorite veggies or stocking stuffers!
3. Scout Seattle Handkerchiefs, $48. Made in the USA and in three beautiful designs: Nautilus, Pine Cone and Cannabis.
4. Found Terrariums, Starting at $28. Each container is crafted with love and no two are alike! Great for those maybe lacking a green thumb!
Darryl Ary has been on his grind for the past twenty years, hawking his wares on the mean streets of Seattle, rain or shine. Scavenging scrap lumber for canvases, he paints and scratches brutalist images that have just enough pop culture jazz to simultaneously charm and repulse. Plus his stuff is cheeeeap!
From wardrobe to engaging strangers on the street, Glenn Billard is a prime example of life-as-art. He does a lot of fabric work (quilts, tapestries, pillows) but also crazy installation and experiential pieces (his Snail Volcano blew, and continues to blow, my mind).
Also: Shannon Perry, Brittany Kusa, Brad Dunn, Le Sang Song, Jordan O’ Jordan, Mal de Fleur, etc.
Dan Paulus is the art director at City Arts magazine. His devastatingly brutal Misfits cover band Underworld Scum plays Chop Suey Weds, December 18.
Well in the past 5 years we have never been in an argument. We all have matching turquoise heart tattoos which is our bands emblem. It’s from an earring that Gavin’s wife owns… we were headed down to a show in LA and we needed merch so Gavin saw it hanging in their bathroom and silk screened it onto a bunch of shirts. Now, we all have them in different places but most importantly Ben has it tattooed on his butt and that really must mean love, right? It must be said that we also got our album name from the Quentin Tarantino movie “True Romance.”
What are you pointing at and what’s this wall behind you?
Some cover text I wrote. It says “MEAT” in big letters, and then “Paul Constant Eats Ayn Rand.” It’s for a review of a smoked-meat restaurant. The Stranger is 22 percent fueled by hatred for Ayn Rand. The wall itself is where we pin up pdfs of all the pages of The Stranger once we’ve sent them to the printer, so we can see a whole issue at once. Also so we can make sure we didn’t mess anything up. If I don’t get all the pages pinned to the wall by 5 pm each Tuesday, I’ll be killed and eaten.
Upcoming: “Go Health Yourself — Join The Stranger and SEIU at Chop Suey on Thursday, November 21 for a party celebrating Obamacare!”
I wish I was better at articulating these kinds of things. Mostly I draw from memories – life experiences, childhood experiences – things that make me feel good and comfortable. Things that are familiar. Familiarity is comforting. For me those things center mostly around food and barf, cats, Lisa Frank’s color pallet, and people who look sort of like my friends? I also hope people think what I draw is kind of funny. Funny stuff is the best.
ArtAche market always brings together great music acts with unique local vendors… what can we look forward to for November’s event?
Lindseys will be bringing the hardest sounds of fast pop punk garage death. Let me put it this way… if you threw your phone in a blender with some blood, sweat, and a dash of reverb, you will get Lindseys. Capitol Hill booking curator Mamma Casserole (Mamma’s Cave) says she’s going to play a “casserole of pysch, soul, jazz, garage, and far out world sounds. Plus, Dj Bobbi Rich (Easy Bake Coven) is bringing big bag of tricks and treats. You just might hear anything & everything out of her, whatever it is, we know it will be witchy. This could be everything from Grace Jones, Kate Bush, Coven, to Kip Tyler, and Stevie Nicks. She’ll be digging deep.
Above all, be sure to grab a mimosa ($3) while checking out our curated list of Capitol Hill community artists and crafters like Meghann Sommers’, Hunter Gatherer Vintage Shop, a whimsical collection from her travels; Kristina Cullen’s handcrafted jewelry line, Open the Cellar Door, a dark meticulously eerie array of beautiful accessories; and get in touch with your mystical side with Ambrosia’s Aura Readings.
ArtAche market takes over Chop Suey this Sunday, November 3rd from 1 to 6pm.
What does the next chapter of The Grizzled Mighty look like?
Well, we head into the studio in a couple weeks to cut the next Grizzled Mighty album with producer Randall Dunn. This will be the most time my bandmate Ryan and I have ever spent in the studio for an album so we will be surrounding ourselves with little warm puppies, children, and girls of the night for inspiration. (You know, like cowboys.) I heard Randall is putting stripper poles in at Avast Studios where we are recording so we can stay limber during recording!! The next chapter looks sexellent!!
You can listen to The Grizzled Mighty’s first album here and help them record their sophmore LP by donating to the album’s indiegogo.
What are the biggest differences of first opening Joe Bar to being a seasoned business owner after many years?
Joe Bar has been in existence since 1997. Cell phones were rare, laptops even more so, no one had wifi and cash was king. NASA hadn’t even landed a rover on Mars yet! I guess Joe Bar is old enough now to reminisce about simpler times. One thing that hasn’t changed is the underlying character of the neighborhood and the importance of community that permeates it. This doesn’t answer your question but it is the part of owning Joe Bar that makes me the happiest.
How did you start playing together and what’s the collaborative process like now?
Loren: Well I had been stewing on this idea for a couple of years. Mostly it’s a narrative about a person who wakes up one morning and finds that their body has been transformed into that of a sea creature. Initially in my head, I saw it as a score to a film.
Ava: So she had been sketching out songs for a while and came to me one night when we were both at a dance party. She had seen me play in another band a few years before at the Comet and knew I played keyboards and basically asked if I wanted to help her flesh out this project. Continue reading →
