Capitol Hill Pets | Joni — the photographer’s dog — on 12th Ave

CHS caught up with Jess (human) and little Joni Mitchell (canine) on 12th Ave. Joni, a terrier mix, was fresh from a springtime grooming at Rex. Joni is a 9-year-old Texas transplant, coming along with Jess in 2010. Getting on in years, Joni’s high jumps and land speed records are lower and slower, but she has the uncanny ability to make people want to pet her, and she loves it. Currently living on Beacon Hill, Joni’s trips to Capitol Hill are a treat, literally. Joni is also my dog, the Corvette behind Joni, though, is not.

Capitol Hill Pets | Buddy Dean the jumper on 19th Ave E

We spied Buddy Dean on the sidewalk near Rocket Taco along 19th Ave E. Buddy Dean is a seven or eight-year-old Basenji Chihuahua mix — like an “Egyptian Prairie Dog,” we’re told. BD is a transplant from NYC and has been in Seattle for about 5 years. “Buddy Dean is an amazing jumper,” his friend says. Continue reading

Capitol Hill Pets | Earl Cheddar Biscuit, the Pac-Man frog of Boren

Dylan Cole, best known for his work as a comic and pizza dude, invited CHS inside his apartment at Boren and Pike to meet his familiar — Earl Cheddar Biscuit, the Pac-Man frog. In an apartment that’s even warmer than Seattle’s unseasonably nice weather, Earl sits under a hand drawn sign, an original from his stint at the pound. Earl is a Seattle rescue but his ancestors hail from the jungles of South America. According to Dylan, Earl is a variety known as an Albino Ornate or CranWelli and his species has been around since long before us, with his ancestors eating small dinosaurs. With a lifespan of 15 years, Pac-Man frogs like Earl Cheddar Biscuit require special attention, but with a human companion like Dylan, he will be well taken care of. Continue reading

Capitol Hill Pets | Self-identifying Paco at Summit Slope Park

Led by Paco in his bright pink sweater, Maria was being taken on a walk near Summit Slope Park when CHS caught up. Paco is a rescue — “some kind of mix. My vet tells me he’s a Chihuahua/Min Pin and German Setter. We don’t think about what happened. We just allow him to be. He can identify as he wishes.” A member of Maria’s family for four years, Paco is soon to turn 5. “He looks like a toy, but he doesn’t feel like a toy,” she said. “Don’t approach him, he’s a grumpy old man.” We often suggest saying hello to little furry friends, but with these two, perhaps just say hello to Maria.

Capitol Hill Pets | Max the kind of a circus dog on E Roy

Max, a seven-year-old Corgi Spaniel mix and Luke were waiting on coffee outside of Joe Bar after CHS got a peek at the inside of the under-construction new home of the Mexican Consulate. Max, while adorable, was only interested in meeting on his terms. Originally from California, he made his way to Seattle and is kind of a circus dog. Like, “if you throw a balloon up, he’ll boop it up in the air with his nose.”

Capitol Hill Pets | Stormy, the Capitol Hill jewelry shop dog

Stormy is the shop dog at Honed, the little jewelry store tucked into Chophouse Row between Kurt’s Farm Shop and Marmite. You can usually find Stormy sitting close to Claire, the store’s owner. Stormy is a miniature Australian Shepherd. Just over three years old, Stormy traveled with Claire from NYC and is known for giving the best hugs. “He gives full body hugs, climbs up on you, puts his arms around you,” Claire said. Don’t get too excited. though. Like anyone, he has to get you know you first.

Capitol Hill Pets | Who’s that guy with Gretel on 15th Ave E?

Adam and Gretel were taking an early morning, drizzly stroll along 15th Ave E near QFC when we caught up with them. Gretel is a 10-year-old Great Dane and has been with Adam since she was a puppy. Getting on in age for such a large dog, the walks are slow but with many friends to greet along the way. In fact, Adam tells us that Gretel is so well known in the area, that Adam often goes unrecognized if he’s walking alone. Say hi to gentle Gretel if you see her in the neighborhood, Adam’s pretty nice too. Continue reading

Capitol Hill Pets | Frankie and Olivia at the library

Frankie and Olivia were spotted trudging through the misty rain outside the Capitol Hill branch of the Seattle Public Library. Frankie, a Pomeranian-Chihuahua mix, is two years old and has been with Olivia since he was a puppy. Apparently, Frankie is already famous on the Hill, not just because of his friendly demeanor but also because he is a mighty jumper.

Capitol Hill Pets | Ash and Cashew on 12th Ave

Ash and Cashew were walking down 12th Ave near Olive when CHS caught up with them last week. Six-month-old Cashew had just come back from the vets office where he was recently relieved of his family jewels. Cashew is a Cavapoo, a Cavalier King Charles and Poodle mix. According to Ash, Cashew is a bit of an attention hound and when meeting strangers, “puts his front paws down and shakes his ass in the air to solicit pets.”

Capitol Hill Pets | Aurea and Raider in Volunteer Park

CHS caught up with Aurea Astro and Raider at the Holiday in the Park event at Volunteer Park. Raider is a pit bull/lab mix who is about seven. Raider is usually never without her ball but lost it on the way to the park that night. Aurea and Raider were united on Christmas Eve two years ago and so far “it has worked out” for the both of them. If you find Raider’s ball, let us know.
