Reborn and revived on Capitol Hill, Kedai Makan readying Belltown expansion

First, Kedai Makan came back from restaurant limbo with a new life at 15th and Pine. Now, it is getting ready to expand to Belltown.

The Capitol Hill Malaysian favorite says it is working on the new 1st Ave location and ready to expand from the E Pine corner where it reopened last year under after founders Kevin Burzell and Alysson Wilson decided they were ready to step away.

At 15th and Pine, the new Kedai Makan is continuing the traditions started at the original Bellevue Ave location and the many farmers markets where the Kedai Makan approach to Malaysian flavors were perfected. It has been a happy transition for the collaboration from Khampaeng “KP” Panyathong with Joe and Lucy Ye of Hangry Panda who originally came together to form the short-lived Money Frog concept.

Kedai Makan now moves forward under the Hagnry Panda ownership.

The old Bellevue Kedai Makan spot is now home to the Jilted Siren lounge.

Permit records show work is underway to make upgrades for the 1st Ave location where “Asian fusion” restaurant Lai Rai closed last summer.

Kedai Makan says only that the new location will open “soon.”

After 35 years on Capitol Hill, Machiavelli family growing with new restaurant in Edmonds

Machiavelli is ready to grow beyond Capitol Hill with a second location in Edmonds joining the family.

“Say goodbye to the famed tomato bisque: Chanterelle restaurant, a fixture of Main Street for decades, is closing Sept. 12. Coming to the spot is Ristorante Machiavelli,” The Edmonds Beacon reports.

The Beacon broke the new last week on the plans from Machiavelli owner — and Edmonds resident — Suzette Jarding.

Jarding tells The Beacon that the Chanterelle’s recipes, including the tomato bisque, are part of the deal. Continue reading →

Broadway’s Boca ready for an even bigger presence on Capitol Hill with plans to add new Argentine asadora to join its ‘restobar’ and bakery

Boca, the “Argentine, funky neighborhood grill,” as the owner calls it, has plans to expand again on Capitol Hill. But it won’t be adding a new Argentinian grill to another part of the city. It is growing on Broadway — the second time in two years the Boca family has grown on Capitol Hill’s core street.

Owner Marco Casas-Beaux tells CHS the restaurant will grow by expanding into the adjacent retail space next door to add an Argentine asadora — a traditional grill.

“I want to tell the people of Seattle—it’s very pretentious of me to say the people in Seattle— Something really unique is coming in, and they’re going to be truly, truly impressed, and they’re going to be immersed, go out for dinner every night, in Buenos Aires,” Casas-Beaux said. From I-5 Shores to Alki, Julian Hagood making plans for Harry’s Beach House

It’s not exactly beach weather but Julian Hagood, the owner and chef behind Capitol Hill’s Harry’s Fine Foods, is already thinking about summer.

Plans for Harry’s Beach House are in motion to transform a former Tully’s Coffee across from West Seattle’s Alki Beach into a new food and drink destination shaped by Hagood.

Think Harry’s at the beach, Hagood says. “The spot will have a significantly larger kitchen to provide a bit more variety,” he writes. “Same killer brunches and seasonally driven fare that caters to locals and visitors alike.” Continue reading →
