Police search for suspects after 21st and Union shootout, E Cherry carjacking — UPDATE

Seattle Police and the King County Sheriff’s Guardian One helicopter searched for suspects after a round of gunfire and car crash near 21st and Union Friday night.

Multiple 911 callers reported more than a dozen shots fired in the street along 21st Ave just after 9 PM. Arriving police found multiple damaged vehicles and a red Camaro crashed nearby, according to East Precinct radio reports.

As the helicopter searched the area from above, an SPD K9 unit took to the ground to try to track the vehicle’s driver who reportedly left a phone behind in the crashed car at the scene.

King County to consider requiring warning signs at gun stores

Efforts to combat gun violence as a public health crisis have inspired a push to require signs posted at King County firearm retailers warning of “the increased risk of suicide, fatal acts of domestic violence, and unintentional deaths to children in homes where a gun is present,” according to an announcement on the King County Public Health proposal.

Tree of Life: Sadness — and calls to action — at Seattle vigil

Mourners gathered at Seattle’s Temple De Hirsch Sinai Monday night to commemorate those lost in Pittsburgh over the weekend and build community through the tragedy.

“Tonight Pittsburgh is a town in Washington state, and the Tree of Life synagogue is a synagogue in Washington state, and the reason for that is that we have one heart over the loss of this assault on the Jewish community,” Governor Jay Inslee said. “We all share a common destiny of hoping for survival and that survival depends on eliminating the concept that there is an other.” Continue reading →

One shot in fight on E Union — UPDATE

A victim was shot in what a witness said was a robbery gone wrong early Wednesday morning on E Union just off the main drag of the Pike/Pine nightlife district. But police say the shooting appears to be part of an altercation between two men with a grudge — not a hold-up.

SPD has confirmed the shooting and tells us the victim’s injuries were not believed to be life threatening. SPD’s brief on the incident has been added below.

Officers rushed to the area outside Sizzle Pie just after 3:20 AM to a reported disturbance and two cars speeding from the scene. They found shell casings and a trail of blood. Continue reading →

Police can’t find gunman — or intended target — after overnight Capitol Hill shootout

Police found shell casings but couldn’t located the shooter or the possible intended target after a volley of gunfire on Capitol Hill early Saturday morning.

911 calls began around 3:30 AM with reports of up to eight shots fired and glass breaking on Belmont near Pine. Police arrived to find shell casings but the combatants and a vehicle possibly involved in the shootout were nowhere to be found.

Police were searching for two men reportedly seen headed west on Pine toward downtown after the gunfire. Another man seen fleeing north on Belmont during the shootout also could not be located.

There were no arrests and no immediate reports of anybody with a gunshot wound arriving at area emergency rooms.

The gun violence follows the three-month “Operation Triple Beam Jet City” led by the U.S. Marshals office which reportedly rounded up dozens of suspected criminals with gang ties off the streets of Seattle.

On night of community meeting to discuss gun violence, East Precinct investigates another drive-by shooting

The East Precinct Advisory Council (EastPAC) gathered for its monthly meeting Thursday to discuss an ongoing wave of shootings and gang activity in the neighborhood and Seattle Police and City Hall’s response to quell the violence.

A recent period of quiet following the shooting death of a man on 25th Ave S earlier this month was busted in the hours before Thursday night’s meeting breaking a string of 17 days without a shots fired incident in the Central District or on Capitol Hill. In the AutoZone parking lot at 23rd and Jackson, two groups in cars exchanged gunfire and witnesses reported people running in opposite directions in an incident reported just before 5 PM, according to Sergeant Andrew Zwaschka, a member of SPD’s gang unit who spoke at the EastPAC meeting.

“We want to put shooters in prison,” Sgt. Zwaschka said. “It takes a lot of time. It’s hard to stand up here and ask for patience when you’re laying in your bed at night and you hear gunfire outside of your window.” Continue reading →

As man dies in Central District shooting, neighbors call for SPD to do more to quell spike in gun violence

Neighbors are pushing for more to be done by police in the Central District following Friday’s murder of Marshall Bennett after the 38-year-old was gunned down at his 25th Ave S residence in continuing gang violence and what police say are personal vendettas driving an ongoing wave of shootings.

Bennett is being remembered by family and residents of the area who knew him as a neighbor and a man who had lived through serious run-ins with the law while paying a major price along the way. When he was convicted of drug charges in 2013 after being arrested with crack cocaine after a fight in a Capitol Hill alley, prosecutors said Bennett had already served more than a decade in jail for a 2001 robbery conviction. Bennett was sentenced to 13 more months in jail in the 2013 case. This summer, Bennett was released from jail in July after being jailed during another drug investigation, according to King County Superior Court records.

Friday’s homicide remains unsolved and detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying a green sedan seen fleeing the area following the shooting. You can call (206) 233-5000 if you have any information that might help. Continue reading →

No injuries but large police response after gunfire at 21st and Union

Another bout of gunfire left shell casings and bullet holes Wednesday night near 21st and Union.

There were no reported injuries and damage reports were limited to vehicles parked in the area in the incident first reported to police just after 8 PM Wednesday. According to East Precinct radio dispatches, callers reported around 10 shots along with two vehicles possibly involved in the incident and a possibly involved male fleeing the area on foot. Police describe the incident as shots fired from a moving vehicle.

Police closed the street in the area as officers looked for shell casings in the gutter, on sidewalks, and in the parking lot near the corner’s busy taco truck as customers and neighbors looked on. Police were also seen knocking on doors of residences in the area. The Seattle gang unit was called to the scene. Continue reading →

SPD responds to ‘7 in 72 hours’ Central District gun incidents with increased presence, arrests

Following CHS’s report on a spate of gun violence in the Central District. a Seattle Police official said Thursday night the department is making progress quelling the uptick in shootings and has made arrests in connection with some of the recent incidents.

At Seattle University on Thursday, the monthly East Precinct Advisory Council (EastPAC) meeting was attended by a standing-room only crowd as anxious community members hoped to hear about SPD’s plans to stunt the recent spate of shootings in the Central District.

‘7 in 72 hours’ — burst of gun violence in the Central District — UPDATE

A spike of gun violence in Seattle including a burst around the Central District has residents asking city officials to do more to quell the outbreak.

Neighbors have tallied “7 in 72 hours” as they tracked gunfire incidents and shootings over social media after two people were shot in an apparent “road rage” assault at 22nd and Pine Wednesday night.

Six more would follow into the weekend including three more bouts of gunfire — near Midtown Center, 28th and Cherry, and 28th and Yesler — in the hours following the 22nd/Pine shooting and a drive-by shooting Friday just before 5 PM near 24th Ave S and Washington in which a teen was reportedly grazed on the backside by a bullet.  Continue reading →
