Despite COVID-19 shadow, Capitol Hill Farmers Market going on as scheduled for shoppers — and vendors

Looking for some normalcy as you “Spring Forward” from this COVID-19-shadowed end of winter?

Organizers of the Capitol Hill Farmers Market say the weekly gathering of local farmers, food, and, drink is still on for this Sunday on Broadway:

Farmers Markets in Seattle will continue as planned this weekend, including the University District, West Seattle, and Capitol Hill Farmers Markets, run by the nonprofit Neighborhood Farmers Markets, and the Ballard Farmers Market, run by the Seattle Farmers Market Association. The markets offer year-round economic opportunity to over 200 Washington State farmers and local food businesses, and also provide access to fresh nutritious food in local settings.

“It is important that everyone understand farmers markets are a place to buy nutritious local food, not a social event,” Jennifer Antos, executive director of the Neighborhood Farmers Markets said in the announcement of the decision. “As an organization based in community connection, our top priority is the health and wellness of market shoppers, vendors, and our staff.”

Don’t forget your clocks will leap forward. This Sunday also brings the start of daylight saving time.

‘With just a few strands of beads and an ambitious dream,’ Fresh Tangerine joins Pike/Pine’s growing shopping and fashion mix

A Seattle creative entrepreneur who got her start with an Etsy “side hustle” has chosen Capitol Hill for a new home to showcase her retail creations.

Seattle jewelry and luxury goods brand Fresh Tangerine has opened its second shop on E Pine in the Odd Fellows Building next door to Molly Moon’s. It will celebrate its grand opening Thursday.

“Fresh Tangerine is known for its delicate designs, unexpected details and affordable quality,” the announcement of the new shop reads. “Their selection includes hand-forged stacker rings, earrings, bracelets, geometric necklaces, and more.” Continue reading →

Shop Africatown at Saturday’s Soul Holiday Market

Goods from Shades of Color will be part of the offerings Saturday at the Soul Holiday Market

With demolition and redevelopment looming, Midtown Center still stands at 23rd and Union. The shopping center is still in the game. Saturday, it will host a celebration and last minute holiday shopping event — the Soul Holiday Market is Saturday 1 to 8 PM:

The Africatown-sponsored event will feature games, music and food trucks.

Midtown Center, meanwhile, might hang around a little longer. Wednesday night, a combined East and Central Area review board voted to send the latest design proposal for the seven-story mixed-use project planned to rise on the block back to the drawing board for further refinement of its community art plans.

It’s a Black Friday, indeed, at E Pike’s new Ritual

With Thanksgiving out of the way, it’s time to Shop the Hill. E Pike’s newest retailer is ready for your business. Meanwhile, two other Hill fashion shops are marking the start of the holiday shopping season celebrating important milestones.

Ritual, a new independent fashion shop from two industry veterans, is now open on the Comet block and ready for your very Black Friday visit.

“When we’re feeling feel sassy, we might have some charcoal,” Sarah Randall Williams tells CHS about Ritual’s monochromatic approach with an emphasis on texture and shape.

Shop local, Shop the Hill 2018

Talk about shopping small and shopping local this holiday season has already started this year with Thanksgiving Thursday falling a little earlier in the calendar than normal.

Through the years, CHS has been part of a small but enduring Capitol Hill holiday shopping tradition of helping spread the word about neighborhood merchants and gift ideas. For free. Some years we’ve had some big help — yup, we might never have guessed we’d ever team up with a giant soda company, either. Some years, we’ve pulled it off on our own.

For E Pike’s Arden Home, a new name and, hopefully, a new connection with the neighborhood

With its first incarnation shadowed by a controversy over interpretation of its longtime brand, Katie Largent is hoping for a better start for Arden Home.

“The change was really bigger than all of the controversy,” Largent said of the backlash that formed when Plantation Design — a Los Angeles-born provider of the botanical motifs, woven surfaces, and shutters of the plantation style of interior design — expanded to San Francisco and Seattle. Madison Pub and Chop Suey are getting a new neighbor

Capitol Hill’s auto row may never truly fade away. CHS has learned that the people behind the neighborhood’s lone remaining automobile showroom now have plans to open another in a 1920-built garage just up the street.

A new Alfa Romeo Seattle showroom and sales offices have begun permitting for a project set to transform the Talbot Building neighboring Chop Suey and the Madison Pub in the 1300 block of E Madison.  Continue reading →

First look inside The Lounge by AT&T and Ada’s Discovery Cafe

Company executives were on Capitol Hill Friday for the telecommunication giant’s unveiling of its glossy new retail experiment, The Lounge by AT&T.

Morgan Collins, vice president for AT&T’s Pacific Northwest, Alaska, and Hawaii markets, tells CHS the company took the risk of trying to launch the new retail concept in an area like Capitol Hill because the neighborhood is home to “creative innovators.”

“I want us to be part of the community,” she said.

Sole Mates brings sneakerhead paradise to Capitol Hill

Seattle’s sneakerheads will have a new foothold on Capitol Hill when Sole Mates, a sneaker consignment store above the Broadway and Pike QFC, opens shop at the end of the month. Owner Parris Johnson said culture is “in demand” on Capitol Hill, and that preparations are basically done and the store should be open by August 31st.

“I felt like this is what the area needs,” Johnson said. “A real true boutique. Brick and mortar.”

Johnson, who grew up in Seattle, jumped at the opportunity to open a business less than a quarter mile from where he grew up on 20th and Union. Continue reading →

Perched on Capitol Hill’s western slope, The Reef brings pot to E Olive Way

Bud, oils and pre-rolled joints were everywhere as The Reef, Capitol Hill’s newest cannabis retailer, opened the doors to its new location for a preview Thursday night.

With its first shop opened in Bremerton three years ago, The Reef’s new storefront takes full advantage of its perch on Capitol Hill at a busy intersection where its predecessor pizza joint and its notorious flashing sign served as a de facto western gate to the neighborhood. With generous amounts of light coming in through windows spanning the width of the storefront, the new location will give Capitol Hill residents a convenient option for their cannabis-related needs.

John Ueding, general manager of The Reef’s Capitol Hill location, explained that the company wants to invest in the community and explore options to work with and support local charity organizations.

“The owners are intent on giving back as much as we can,” Ueding said. “Being local Seattle guys, we really want to be involved in the community.” Continue reading →
