17th Ave artist collective house puts on weekend craft show, Hugo House, too

No matter how much you plan ahead of time for the holidays, something always seem to be left out. Well, here’s a chance to purchase some unique local handmade crafts at The InArtSNw, an artist collective house. You can imagine having a craft show, “It’s Always Bazaar”, is just one of the many things this place has to offer. Still being in it’s infancy evolving from a hybrid yard sale last summer, “It’s Always Bazaars” involves the imagination of Monica Street.

In speaking with Adair Tudor, first time participant and resident in this massive house, says,”The In (TheInArtsNW) is a live/work space that typically houses 20-28 residents. The residents are from a range of disciplines: culinary, painting, music, textiles, radio, theater, writing, production, design, photography (you name it.” The In hosts a lot of other events that include, Move: a unique performance salon/open mic, Blitz Capitol Hill Art Walk, workshops and productions written, directed and performed by “Inmate” Tony James. This is just to name a few events that are happening regularly at the In. What’s most exciting for Adair (and her “Inmates”) is the potential to become a non-profit, “Whats really exciting is we’re in the process of pursuing non-profit status and hope to eventually acquire the building. If this were possible we’d be able to potentially raise enough funds to actually be able to work with a budget- allowing us to provide more facilities for the community and residents.”

Former Capitol hill gallery owner Andrea Porter’s Handmade Holidays Craft Fair will be at Hugo House on Saturday, December 18th. In genius fashion, it’s geared for last-minute shoppers:

In my previous life, before baby, I used to own and run Bluebottle Art Gallery in Capitol Hill. Sometimes I miss it, particularly at the holidays when things are busy and people really appreciate buying handmade and local for their loved ones. Since we no longer own Bluebottle (that honor goes to one of our vendors – Jessie Oleson of  Cakespy  I thought I’d jump back in the mix and organize a one day shopping event!

I have asked my very favorites of craft vendors in Seattle to join us for a one day sale. Everyone can get their last minute shopping done and feel good knowing they have supported a local artisan sustain their craft business! 11 local artists showcase their handcrafted wares for the very best in last minute holiday shopping!

So, what exactly is “It’s Always Bazaar”? It’s a quarterly arts/craft sale event that “The IN presents and is put together by residences of The IN with the intention to provide an affordable and art-rich community space for local DIY artists and crafters,” says Adair.

Not only is the In an amazing venue but also a “world” of creativity that is encouraged by all its residents. In supporting each other and others like themselves it’s no doubt this craft sale will be full of imagination, color, hard work, love and uniqueness. If you are looking for something inexpensive and local, this is the place to be. “My faaavorite thing about the Bazaar is that it gives a venue to hard working artists/crafters/(creators) at a might-as-well-be-free fee so they can support themselves through their own creative ideas and skills,” couldn’t be better said by Adair.

It’s Always Bazaar is this weekend, December 18th and 19th from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The house is located at 1633 17th Ave., between Madison and Olive, across from Trader Joe’s. To be informed of upcoming events at the In find them on Facebook as “inartsnw”. Also, if you are a visual artist and would like to be an artist at Capitol Hill Blitz please contact Adair with a portfolio link at [email protected].

If you’re talking about “It’s Always Bazaar” it’s from 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM. I think the one at Hugo House is only on Saturday.
