Business Name: Tirto Furniture

Tell us about your business: Our family has a furniture workshop in Indonesia, where owner Chris grew up. All of our furniture is handmade, primarily from salvaged and refurbished teak wood, in that workshop and then shipped directly to our store so we can offer affordable prices on unique furniture ranging in style from modern to a more traditional European feel.

What is the best thing about having a business on Capitol Hill? Co-owner Claire, grew up 10 blocks from our store and has loved opening a business in such a welcoming and supportive community. Capitol Hill has been a fabulous location for us because everyone around us, those living in modern apartments to families in grand Capitol Hill homes, has found furniture to furnish their homes. Our prices are less than box stores like Crate and Barrel and West Elm, but our furniture is made of solid wood and built by craftspeople who have been making furniture for decades!

Why is it important for people to shop local, especially around the holidays? As a family and a business we strongly believe in supporting local businesses. We are fortunate to be surrounded by many locally owned businesses in our 19th Ave & E. Mercer Street neighborhood. Shopping local helps support our city’s economy and provides opportunities for people to feed their families, pay rent and have funds to spend within their neighborhoods.
