I’ve looked in June, and I’ve looked in September, and there were a lot more units available in my price range in June. However, my September experience was about 15 months after my June experience, and the price of just about every apartment went up in the mean time.

Ha ha. I’ve been told slowest month (therefore, best for renters) for apartments and real estate in general is Dec but who wants to move then? I’d vote for July — after the early summer rush, things quiet down and you won’t have to move in the rain. Of course, you’ll find slimmer pickings but I don’t always do well with lots of choices :)

There always seems to be a ton of people looking in August for September 1st but I don’t have a sense of other months

We actually had a very hard time last November/early December; it was surprising and much easier when we looked again in Feb/March. I’ve seen a lot more for rent signs up prolongedly- hoping this means that rents will drop a little or at least stop rising. I suspect we’re paying about $100-300 more a month for our place than what it would’ve rented for just 1.5-2years ago.
