Attn: SDOT/Sound Transit – Beautiful Bridges

One of the benefits of working for engineers is that I get to see all their trade magazines. I picked up this month’s copy of Aspire, the concrete bridge magazine and was surprised by the loveliness of the image on the cover.

Art piece? Concept Drawing? Nope and nope – it’s the Canyon Park Freeway Station in Bothell.

There is hope for us yet, Seattle! Large cement structures can be beautiful and (relatively) inexpensive! Attention SDOT & Sound Transit – can we get something like this for the Pike/Pine overpasses over I5? That’d be great.

PS Even more beautiful – Maple Avenue Bridge in Redmond, Oregon.

The image on the cover of Aspire was just of the columns on the bridge, which are my favorite feature. The bridge as a whole – ok. The column design – lovely (sigh, Art Deco).

I will stand behind my opinion that the Maple Avenue Bridge is beautiful. Then again, I’m fond of simple soaring lines.
