I Love Was abi

The new Sushi restaurant on Broadway fixed their small typo and is now going with “I Love Was abi.” I’m sure it won’t take long to rearrange the letters.

But for now, here’s the sign. 8 Block Walk captured its early-phase ‘Washabi’ variation.

I saw that on Sunday and wondered if it was a play on our state name. Guess not.

Wow. That would have been so cool if it was. Change it back!

I don’t know anything about the owners, but you know, the Japanese language doesn’t distinguish between “s” and “sh” sounds–they are the same phoneme and differ only when they occur before different vowel sounds. (Palatalization [s–>sh] happens approx when s occurs before the vowel in “bee” or any diphthong that starts with that vowel).

The error here isn’t about spoken language, but I can forgive them for screwing up the romanization of a word …that they would not write this way. If that’s what happened.
