While last week’s CHS interview featured a modern day big band leader, this week’s spotlight is on an electro-pop performance duo. Diversity. Meet Sap’N. The members of this Capitol Hill-based, fun-loving group, Regina Aletto and Mitch, recently added live DJ/lawyer Joan Law to the mix. The trio will be performing at Lo-Fi Performance Gallery down across I-5 Friday night at 9:30 PM. To help you decide what to do with your Friday night, Aletto answered some questions about their music and life as musicians on the Hill.
Tell me about your music style and your band’s name
Sap’N is an electro pop performance duo backed by the DJ stylings of Joan Law. Our sound is heavy hitting pop music and dance beats mixed with some current and forward thinking sounds. An element that is also a little different than most electro is that we power sing in a lot of the songs. And we compose and write all of our own music! Also our DJ is a lawyer. A real one. As far as our band name, it was formed in 2008 (we actually began as a band early 2009) as an a playful acronym but evolved into defining something entirely new that represents us and what we do: fun!
What makes your live shows so appealing?
We try to create a fun, dancey environment with musical transitions between songs and fun theatrics to add a bit more onstage. We hope that it’s obvious we are having a ball onstage and that we try to transfer that energy to the crowd. 3.
What’s your connection with Capitol Hill?
Well we all live on the Hill and have for a while now. Not only do we live there but we all spend most of our free time there too. And HOT MAMA’S.

How has Capitol Hill influenced Sap’N?
Capitol Hill is unlike anywhere else. You can see or be a weirdo and no one even bats an eye. We try to do different things that are unique or new and Capitol Hill is the greatest crowd to expose yourself to. That wasn’t meant to sound sexual if it did. Also the amount of space to put all your posters is great as well.
What do you love most about the Hill? The least?
Well like I said before, about being a weirdo for sure. It’s much more open than a lot of places in terms of a lot of different ways of thinking and it’s got a lot of great places to go and things to do. Tons of parks, great restaurants, great bars and most of our friends live here too. It’s also fun that it’s pretty small, it’s sort of hard to go out and not run into someone you know. Which can also be a bad thing when you are out stocking up on Fruity Pebbles and ice cream in your in-home-only sweatsuit. Oh and parking sucks.
Favorite places on the Hill?
Pretty much anywhere that has good food, good beer, fun atmosphere and without hardcore hipster judgement. And Twice Sold Tales. Sunday brunch at Linda’s!! Oh and Cairo, Value Village, Atlas, Joe Bar, Molly Moon’s and EVERYTHING.
What’s your take on the local Seattle music scene? Where do you see it going?
I think there is a lot of creativity out there and people are doing some really fantastic things. It’s so fun to be apart of the music scene here because we are constantly exposed and impressed by local acts. I like the crossing over of genres like hip hop and electro and pop within groups as well as shows. I think it will only get better and we are excited to be a part of it all.
Sap’N is working with Peter from Mad Rad to record a video and several songs to complete an EP. Until then, find Sap’N on MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter, and don’t forget to see them live at Lo-Fi.
