Hill Sports | Seattle U basketball is practicing… shooting (hopefully)

Sterling Carter takes a high percentage shot last season (Image: Seattle U Athletics)

Division I men’s basketball teams began practicing over the weekend, Seattle U among them. Your Redhawks are coming off of a disappointing 11-20 season, the main culprit being the offense. Overall, Seattle U shot just 44.2%, 300th out of 345 Division I teams. The Redhawks’ season–their third in Division I and last as an independent before joining the WAC next year–starts November 12 with an exhibition vs. PLU at KeyArena…

Huge game Thursday night in high school football as undefeated #8 Seattle Prep plays undefeated #3 O’Dea for first place in the Metro Mountain Division and a spot in next week’s Metro League Championship game.

The game between the two city schools which are just across the Hill from each other will be played across the Duwamish in West Seattle Stadium (7 p.m., bring a blanket). Sad trumpet. Prep hasn’t beaten O’Dea in football since 1980, so in the event of a victory expect the streets of North Capitol Hill to swarm with revelers. Or, at least, a wealthy couple smiling more broadly than usual on their nightly walk of their purebred dog…

In other two-ranked-teams-facing-off action, Prep plays O’Dea sister school Holy Names in girls’ soccer tonight. Prep is #2 in the state, with Holy Names ranked #5. The game is at Lower Woodland (3:30 p.m.)…Another girls’ soccer game between two successful teams: Seattle Academy (11-2-1) vs. University Prep (10-3-1), Friday at Twin Ponds Field in Shoreline (7 p.m)…

Seattle Prep golfer Ryan Books is the WIAA/Seattle Times 3A Boys State Athlete of the Week after winning the Metro League Golf Championship by 13 strokes. He was unable to repeat his dominance in the district tourney, however losing in a playoff. O’Dea and Seattle Prep finished 1-2 at districts; O’Dea had three of the top nine finishers…

Best sports action that’s actually on the Hill this weekend: Friday afternoon at 3:30, when Seattle U men’s soccer plays #5-ranked, undefeated New Mexico at Championship Field. If you can’t make the early start Friday, go Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Redhawks have a better chance of winning, against 2-10-0 UNLV.

Or go check out the 20-year anniversary demonstration and free class at 19th Ave E’s Emerald City Aikido on Saturday. If you’re into that whole participation thing, there’s also the OmYoga benefit for Jubilee Women’s Center on Saturday night at the Electric Tea Garden.
