WSDOT holding open house on 520 Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke lid construction

The Washington State Department of Transportation is holding an open house both in-person and online to provide information about the project schedule and construction details around the SR 520 Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project that will create a new Portage Bay Bridge and a lid connecting the Roanoke neighborhood over the highway:

Calling all Portage Bay and Roanoke Park neighbors!
As work gets underway for the SR 520 Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project, we’re hosting an in-person open house on July 25.
At the open house, you can learn more about the project schedule and how we’ll minimize noise and keep traffic moving during construction. You’ll also get a chance to meet the contractors, ask them questions directly, and learn how to stay informed about the project.
Neighbors can expect work to begin in late August/early September of this year. The project is anticipated to be completed in 2031.
Date and Time: Thursday, July 25, 2024, 5 to 7 p.m.
Location: St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2100 E. Boyer Ave., Seattle, WA 98112
Transit Access: King County Metro routes 43 and 48 serve the church area.
Parking: Limited free parking is available on site. Street parking is also available.
Register here: http://bit.ly/sr520meeting (Note: Registration is preferred, but not required)
Can’t make the in-person event? That’s okay! We’re also hosting an online open house beginning July 25. At the online open house, you can learn more details about the project schedule and review the materials presented at the in-person event. The online open house is available starting July 25 through Sept. 17 at engage.wsdot.wa.gov.

You can register for the open house here.

CHS reported here on the decision to move forward on the $1.4 billion Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project as officials work to identify “cost reduction opportunities” and sort out how to pay for the contract. State leaders have reportedly considered extending the tolled portion of 520 to include areas of the highway like the planned-for Roanoke Lid and new Portage Bay bridge.

Work continues, meanwhile, on the Montlake Lid portion of the multiyear replacement project with only a few final hiccups in the final months of the construction.

They’re fucking awful. Got rid of the bike and pedestrian tunnel to save a few pennies.

In my opinion, the Roanoke Lid is a colossal waste of money. There is already a perfectly nice park across the street to the north. What exactly will the lid add to the area? As for the completion date of 2031….wtf?
