Thousands gathered at the Central District’s Garfield High School Monday to remember Martin Luther King Jr. and march against efforts to undermine his legacy and roll back progress around equity and civil rights.
The march on the crisp January day was part of a weekend of quiet protest in Seattle. Saturday, thousands took part in the city’s People’s March from Cal Anderson Park with signs and chants pledging resistance as Donald Trump begins his improbable second term in the White House.
Monday, the volunteers that organize Seattle’s annual MLK march chose a direct theme — “We Rise Against Project 2025,” they said, targeting the initiatives first put forward by conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation championing right-wing policies to reshape federal government that has grown into a buzzword capturing the elements of “MAGA” and then some. Its includes attacks on social programs and pillars like the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
The annual celebration’s events also included a rally in the Garfield gym along with workshops and an opportunity fair.
The messages? Multitudinous.
An estimated 4,000 people took part in the march and the day’s events in Seattle.
