Seattle’s political 2025 season is shaped as a battle of incumbents vs. upstart challengers with divides along the center-leaning leaders who currently hold the offices — and want to stay — and candidates who say they will bring a more progressive vision to City Hall.
This week’s 43rd District Democrats endorsement meeting for the upcoming August primary was a showcase for these challenging progressives.
“We must do better to protect Seattle communities from attacks against the Trump administration,” mayoral candidate Katie Wilson told the endorsement meeting crowd Tuesday night, criticizing incumbent Mayor Bruce Harrell’s middle-of-the-road approach to housing, social services, and civil rights.
The progressive organizer who has worked with organizations like the Transit Riders Union, and helped lead minimum wage and renter rights campaigns around the region secured the 43rd’s endorsement with a strong 89 votes (82.4%) out of 108 ballots cast, triumphing over incumbent Harrell and candidates Ry Armstrong, Joe Molloy, and Joe Mallahan with her commitment to “Trump-proofing” Seattle with a multifaceted approach including addressing homelessness, affordable housing, and transportation.
Wilson underscored her coalition-building experience, citing her involvement in the Human Services Bus Ticket Program and the Seattle Youth ORCA Program, as well as her role in raising the minimum wage in Tukwila, Burien, and unincorporated King County. She also made a sly jab at Harrell, suggesting Seattle deserves mayors who lead with integrity rather than becoming embroiled in scandals. Wilson stressed the need for change, noting, “More people are sleeping unsheltered on our streets than ever before. Working families are struggling to stay afloat. We can do so much better.”
The 43rd’s choices in the Seattle City Council races also flowed into the progressive lane.
An incumbent was the group’s favorite in citywide Position 8, current office holder Alexis Mercedes Rinck secured the 43rd’s sole endorsement with an overwhelming 99 votes (97.1%) out of 102 cast.
For the other citywide Position 9 and the expected hard battle with incumbent Council President Sara Nelson, Dionne Foster received a commanding 90 votes (87.4%) out of 103 ballots, earning her the sole endorsement.
Foster, a mom, nonprofit executive, and former community organizer and policy advisor, is running against incumbent Nelson and economist Connor Nash.
Nelson was absent from the meeting, while Nash emphasized community distrust in the current city council. Foster highlighted her track record, stating, “I am really proud that I have spent my career fighting. I have fought for equity. I have fought for opportunity, and I have fought and delivered real outcomes. We deserve a Seattle that is going to be affordable for all of us. We deserve a city where we can afford to raise our families. We deserve safe streets where our kids can go out and play—and so much more.”
Foster also articulated her vision for growth. “For me, we’re at a place where we have a tremendous opportunity to plan and deliver on growth in a way that can be great for our housing, so that we can have housing that is affordable and also housing that is abundant,” said.
“The voice that I want to bring is, like, we’re trying to create a Seattle that works for everyone.”
A progressive upstart also got the 43rd’s nod in the City Attorney race where three candidates vied for support. Erika Evans emerged victorious, securing the endorsement with 70 votes (61.4%) out of 114 ballots cast, comfortably surpassing the required 60% threshold.
Evans, a former federal prosecutor, spoke about her personal experiences with poverty and how strong union jobs helped her family. She emphasized her commitment to public service throughout her career. “I’m proud to be the only person in this race that’s only worked with public service my entire career,” Evans stated. “Most recently, I’ve served as a civil rights prosecutor where I held hate groups and bad officers accountable at a federal level that violated our civil rights, and I left that role because I could not stand by and just be one of Trump’s orders.” If she wins, Evans would be the first elected Person of Color in the role.
Evans will face a battle with incumbent City Attorney Ann Davison and her emphasis on increased focus on drug and street crime in the city.
The 43rd Dems also added their support to other less followed — and likely less contentious — races including throwing their support in the King County Executive race behind current King County Councilmember Girmay Zahilay who has been a clear early favorite since incumbent Dow Constantine opted to move on from the office.
Other endorsements included the Port of Seattle Commissioner races where a slate was unanimously passed (86 Yes, 3 No) endorsing uncontested candidates Ryan Calkins (Position 1), Hamdi Mohamed (Position 3), and Toshiko Hasegawa (Position 5).
For the Seattle School Board, Joe Mizrahi received the endorsement for District 4 with 68 votes (71.6%) out of 95 ballots, introduced by Rep. Nicole Macri, who praised his understanding of schools, parents’ needs, and budget issues. No candidate reached the threshold for endorsement in Seattle School Board District 5 on the first ballot or upon reconsideration, resulting in no endorsement for that race. For Seattle School Board District 7, Jen LaVallee was endorsed with 42 votes (66.7%) out of 63 ballots.
In addition to candidate endorsements, the nearly 200 43rd Democrats members present also endorsed funding for the city’s Democracy Voucher program. Seattle voters will decide on a proposed $45 million renewal of the voucher program in August’s primary.
The 43rd District Dems also weighed in on the county’s plan to open a Capitol Hill mental health crisis center at Broadway and Madison, passing a resolution to support the planned facility. CHS reported on the county’s plans for the Capitol Hill Crisis Care Center in May.
The August primary will take place August 5th. The top two candidates in each race will go through to the November General Election. Ballots for the by-mail primary will be sent out in July.

GO KATIE WILSON!
Lol she gonna get crushed. We aren’t going back to what things were like 5 years ago.
You are beyond wrong or confused or being a troll. Harrell is the same ol same ol while being council president or mayor for 16+ years.
“lol” nope, she’s getting massive support on Reddit and that’s been a big tell on the polling because Reddit got Rinck elected and will probably work for Wilson too. People are sick of Corporate Harrell
lol, imagine thinking reddit is representative of the Seattle electorate.
Tiffany must have fallen asleep when Rinck won the most votes ever in city history
LOL! Like X is for the Nazi’s?
LOL! Like FOX ‘news’?
Derek, “CDResident” is doing cope, they all do when their status quo is being threatened
Remember when Reddit got Lorena González elected mayor….oh right!
Reddit was pro Harrell then. That is not the case now
Wilson helped to create the Jumpstart measure to fund housing, and lead and won campaigns to increase minimum wage and renters protections.
That’s her actual record and trajectory – forward.
Also, polls and fundraising suggest she’s doing quite well, so I look forward to returning and seeing you post that you were wrong about her getting “crushed.”
I have not sent my democracy vouchers yet :O)
Katie is getting them all.
Except for Zahilay, it’s a hard no on all of these people for me
Why would anyone want Sara “Corrupt as hell” Nelson???
Please provide specific evidence that Nelson is “corrupt.” Otherwise, it’s just name-calling.
Like when she took $2 million in PPP loans and claimed she wouldn’t layoff any employees, then proceeded to fire workers right before the holidays and had the gall to lie about it?
Why would you not like Rinck? She has tremendous support and has been a godsend on an awful conservative council.
Oh I dunno allegedly fucked Rich Smith, in itself a lack of judgment on a personal level. But politically, fuck the editor of the unfortunately then prominent far left endorsement machine? Serious lack of judgment. Can do better than Rinck.
I thought Rinck was “queer”? what’s she doin havin straight “relations”?
Why do you care who she has sex with lol
Your labeling our current City Council as “conservative” is just not accurate. By any measure, it is a moderate council, and that’s a good thing.
Conservative and moderate are inaccurate. They are left of center. The mayor is right of center on some social issues and I think he is far right as far as his feeling towards the LBGQ community. Some on here think if you are not as far left as Sawant then you are MEGA, with no in-between. Even Nelson would be considered a left leaning moderate or moderate to the rest of the country.
Please provide evidence that Harrell is “far right” towards the LGBTQ community. Very doubtful label.
See zero proof they are “left of center” they want less business taxes, less worker benefits, and more power into white collar corporate managerial class in Seattle
Conservative? Compared to what? Sawant.
color me shocked
Wilson’s positions on sweeps disqualify her automatically. Cal Anderson is once again druggie and tent central. It’s bad enough under Bruce. It can however get worse, we all know that.
I was there two hours ago when you commented this…it’s not as you describe at all lol
I just walked past it 15 minutes ago. Tiffany is 100% correct. Maybe you missed the area where they were all congregated? It was on the north side of the park.
I’m in the same boat. I wish there were candidates who had more pragmatic views on homelessness and drugs, while still being progressive on things like transit and upzoning.
Wilson is a stop-the-sweeps, drug policy extremist in the vein of Nikita Oliver. Hard no
Actually she’s pro sweeps which is why leftists are iffy on her. Do your research
you always say the sky is either falling, or will fall (fill in the blank) progressive causes.
I appreciate their prolific research into informing me whom not to vote for this primary season.
HaHa….yes! Just like The Stranger endorsements. When did the 43rd Democrats get taken over by the far-left?
Every time they issue endorsements its just another reminder that the 43rd District political group is “Dem” in name only. You can count on them to endorse the furthest left candidate regardless of party affiliation. They actually changed their bylaws in the past to endorse Sawant.
This group lost all credibility when they endorsed Marxist Democratic Socialist Sawant.
Well? Do you live here? Move to Marblemount or Index. That’s more your speed.
Sawant was awful…my child picked up a needle in a park in Central District from an encampment and her response was literally, then don’t let your kids in the park.
So no she’s responsible for one needle found in a park?
You don’t get it. Like I mean life. Where’s does all the money come from. One minute it’s mad about needles in parks. The next it’s complain about fixing it and the costs involved. Using”It’s a waste of money on liberal policies” when it’s actually what the alt right screams for. Like the border. Trump sunk the plan so he could do this.
While I assume there’s definitely outrage over the needle, and there should be, I think this particular outrage is as much over the attitude from Sawant that the drug addict’s mess belongs in the park more than the child does…
Sawant isn’t here man. Also? People voted for it. I am more concerned about the current councils efforts to slay ethics laws.
didn’t people vote for that too?
I live here and will make sure to vote for the most qualified opponents running against this clown car lineup of out-of-touch candidates.
We will be outvoting the “E Republican Line” (appropriately named)
Great retort. You sure schooled me! Lol
Again with a reference to Marblemount. I never knew this place even existed before your mentions. Seems like an idyllic place to vacation or have retirement property.
It’s stunning. I raised my 5 kids off grid there. I had to move. It was a shock at first but I am sooper happy on the hill.
There’s a camp ground called marble creek. It is the best I’ve found. You want #12. It’s the only double lot. so any vehicle will fit. Even the class A. The others are class B at best.
It also has an awesome cedar for shade and the river is right there for the kids to play in. No current. Just a nice pool. My kids have played there since birth. I owned property in Cascade River Park. About 8-9 miles away. Rarely a burn ban too. So bring lots of fire wood from around town before you head up Cascade River Rd. The road trip to Winthrop is hard to beat as well.

Since when did one have to be a far left socialist in order to live in Seattle?
It’s time to take our country back!
Vote straight ticket progressive.
pretty sure these are candidates for local offices, please no more sawantistas that are only doing the job for national attention and ignoring local constituents
Yes, are country is being stolen by liberal democrats elected to local Seattle offices. Way to keep you eye on the ball there Smooth.
“are country”
Nooo…school board to the POTUS. Everywhere we can be elected.
If you want Seattle to go back to the path of Caracas, Havana or other corrupt commie cities these are your peeps! Even SF peeps have figured out what a dead end this ideology is. We live with really dense folks that are so distracted by Trump that they don’t see how they themselves are embracing a form of his bullshit
Well, Trump is destroying Democracy. it’s worth the attention. We know Trump media loves to distract from what Trump is up to. Fear mongering and just saying it? Doesn’t make it it. Like America = Cuba. Really?
You alt right types are mentally ill. No common sense at all. Completely uncurious. Just spew what’s fed to you that best serves YOUR agenda and nobody else’s. America first really means ME FIRST.
Calm down Smooth. Most everything you say here is true but Adam Smith is most certainly not alt right. I think his point was watch out or we’ll end up like Cuba, not that we currently are. He’s clearly not a fan of Trump. Maybe you have some intersectional points of agreement.
You mean under military rule? Yeah, we intersect there awright…lol
Not much of a response. I too fear military rule but you are deflecting. Adam Smith leads us to military rule how?
I find it interesting that one of Trump’s egregious views is the whole build the wall thing… but then think about who actually did build a wall… It was the communists, right around Berlin in 1961… except that one wasn’t to keep people out, it was to keep people in. I don’t know about you, but as far as I’m concerned any form of government that needs to imprison it’s population so they don’t flee en-masse, does’t sound like a form of government I want to (be forced to) live under.
I understand the differences between a social democrats and Marxist socialists. One party has proven it can create happy, productive, prosperous countries.. the other one, not so much. As far as the 43rd district Democrats go, IMHO they stopped being representative of the Democratic Party, the moment they chose to endorse Sawant, who was a Marxist. This is not a rumor, this is not a slur, it is what she proudly proclaimed herself to be… and it is not a philosophy I can agree with. I would approach any recommendations from the 43rd with a great deal of skepticism these days.
Oh no…you are 100% right on keeping us in. The current dems can’t meet the moment. We need a more militant approach.
Militant like how?
Russia in the 80s and early 90s was not communistic in any way. Communism in name only.
Sorry, but nope. You don’t get to use the ‘it wasn’t actually communist because it never achieved the Marxist utopian ideal’ argument. Russia in the 80’s is exactly what all communist countries end up like and why it always fails.
Adam Smith votes in favor of Israel so I am voting AGAINST him
No room for Zionism anymore. Done with Trump and Netanyahu supporters like Smith. Voting Sawant just like I voted Jill Stein. (Don’t worry snowflakes that didn’t matter in Washington so you can’t say I’m why Kamala didn’t get elected)
It’s Obama’s fault…They still have not seen “the real birth certificate”.
You can not reason with a fanatical follower.
They ought to just call themselves the Seattle Socialists because they are so far left they are basically socialists.
More like Marxists. Socialism I can talk about. Marxism hard pass.
These are the most vanilla dems ever and we have to fight hard to get them over lousy republican wannabes like Sara Nelson
The Democrats really need to take back their party; the Socialists really need to find a way out of the closet.
I am down with a progressive party, but democrats will NOT like that
