Capitol Hill’s Lady Krishna — love, meditation, and new music

Natasha Shulman, better known as Lady Krishna, tells CHS she is working on a new album. Those unfamiliar with Lady Krishna need look no farther than her website, which showcases her multimedia art and performances.

Lady Krishna has lived in the neighborhood consistently since the late 90s after nearly two decades spent in New York City, among other spots. Ever since, she has enriched the Hill with her paintings, albums, and meditations, though not without recent challenges due to her health as well as the coronavirus.

“I feel a part of the community so much in Seattle, I’m happy I’m here and I’m getting such good care here,” said Lady Krishna.

She recently finished mixing and mastering her latest song, with the working title I’m a butterfly, I came to be free, as part of an upcoming album.

Three months ago, Lady Krishna was diagnosed with colon cancer.

She told CHS that she intentionally finished recording her most recent song ahead of starting chemotherapy treatment in order to complete it without fatigue.

“I feel really good about the present, that I’m alive, and there’s lots of love around me,” said Lady Krishna.

This song, which she describes as more akin to electronic and dance music than her previous works, is not yet available for streaming. Until then, listeners can find previously released albums by Lady Krishna’s Peppermint Lounge on her site.

Lady Krishna describes her musical style as devotional hardcore lounge.

“I’m kind of like a punk rocker but very elegant– my work is lyrically inclined,” said Lady Krishna.

On her website, readers can find a gallery of Lady Krishna’s paintings, the first being a portrait she created of Brian Eno in 1979. The series of art snippets displayed here showcase a unique abstract style, which Lady Krishna views as “children’s prison art,” expressing the childlike side of her identity she holds onto.

Though in the past Lady Krishna has routinely hosted weekly meditations at 8 Limbs Yoga Center, she has placed this program on hiatus due to the coronavirus. She is considering an online video alternative in place of the now-suspended in-person meetings, and emphasized that meditations can be done individually with ease.

While she continues to produce her art, Lady Krishna is prioritizing her health and wellness above all else.

“My big job right now is to love and be loved,” she said.
