City dings DoorDash for $1.6M violation of Seattle Gig Worker Paid Sick and Safe Time rules

DoorDash has again been dinged by the Seattle Office of Labor Standards for violating the city’s Gig Worker Paid Sick and Safe Time Ordinance. The city announced a $1.6 million settlement with the app-based restaurant delivery company this week.

According to the city, DoorDash failed to “establish an accessible PSST system for some gig workers to request and use PSST, didn’t compensate some gig workers for use of PSST, and did not “provide a monthly notice of PSST balance information to all of its Seattle workforce over a period of two months.”

The $1.6 million settlement breaks down to $500,064.13 paid out to 648 workers, $8,629.62 in fines to the City of Seattle, and $1,127,130.06 in PSST credits to approximately 26,500 workers, according to the Office of Labor Standards announcement.

In 2021, DoorDash was also nailed by the ordinance and had to pay back around $145,000 to workers.

CHS reported here on the 2023 Seattle City Council vote that permanently extended “Paid Sick and Safe Time” protections for app and gig workers first established during the COVID-19 crisis sponsored by council member Teresa Mosqueda.

I love this. Doordash is awful and people who spend money on this service to bring them food they can just go pick up are weird
