Pedestrian struck by car on 12th Ave – UPDATED

Details are slim but saw a series of aid response callouts to 12th Ave and E. Denny tonight around 8:47 PM — from the scanner, heard report that a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle. Injuries unknown at this time. Not sure if it’s a good sign but the incident cleared relatively quickly. Will update when I know more. Here’s a look at the intersection by day on Google Street View. Crossing 12th is always a little scary — on a dark night in this rain, it’s even scarier.

UPDATE 4/3/09 8:50 AM: SFD confirms a woman in her 30s was struck by a car as she was crossing the street. Fortunately, injuries were reported as minor.

That’s very interesting, I live at 12th and Denny and my husband and I haven’t heard a peep from outside besides the rain on the windows and cars driving past, so if it happened right outside my house just an hour ago, the response must’ve been awfully quiet. However people are generally terrible about stopping for the flashing pedestrian crossing sign, so it wouldn’t surprise me if someone was hit and I sincerely hope they’re alright.

i almost got run over at 12th/john just a block from there a month or two ago. my office overlooks that intersection and hardly a light-cycle goes by without either a car vs pedestrian, car vs cyclist, or car vs car (or bus) collision. people drive too quickly on that road (including the police going to / from their station), it seems nobody is paying attention, and it’s just a scary street to have to cross.

spd does seem to be pretty good about running speed traps out there but maybe it’s time to lower the speed limit, narrow the street, or take some other measure to get pedestrian/cyclist safety engineered in.

oh, and at the 12th/john intersection, protected left-turns would do a lot to minimize problems for traffic coming off of 12th and off of john. i nearly got toasted by a car that was rushing through a left turn to save 5 seconds – she didn’t bother to check the crosswalk and raced through the intersection only concerned about oncoming traffic.

You take your life into your own hands walking and following the law on Capitol Hill. Assume every driver is out to kill you. Never assume a driver will actually follow the law and slow down or stop for pedestrians. Me and a couple other pedestrians almost got slammed by an idiot who flew into the circle one block west of this intersection last week.

This is a difficult intersection for peds, exacerbated by drivers that don’t follow the signage that limits westbound traffic from going straight on Denny…and drivers simply racing down 12th.
The 12th Ave streetscape and crosswalks are fairly nice down by SU…time to continue that up to John (but with real stone pavers, not the stamped concrete). Some landscape islands in the median/turn lane might help to slow traffic down a bit as well and still provide for deliveries and turning.

Crossing 12th at Denny is my least favorite place to cross as a pedestrian. Maybe there should be a light or a sign there or something.

i think i walked past this right after it happened.
police were on the scene, plus what i think was the fire dept ambulance.
the woman was sitting on the southwestern corner of 12th & denny, rather (understandably) upset.
there was a car stopped along the northern edge of denny, immediately to the west of 12th.
perhaps she was hit while the car was making a left from 12th onto denny westbound? i left rather than gawk.

that is an absolutely terrible place to cross the street; i do it quite often and it isn’t fun. what to do, walk a block to 12th & john, or else further down 12th to the next (faraway) light?

There is a flashing light, a marked crosswalk, and multiple signs.
