This week’s block party: Capitol Hill Independence Day, Night?

After the amazing debut of Saturday’s Capitol Hill Pride Festival:

C. Hill has a new pride event, a Sat. street event, all good, no competition for the vast Sunday parade and Center happening, just a pleasant couple of hours and not requited to spend a fortune.

A noisy but intriguing takeover of the People’s Parking lot:

while i think the idea of a dance party (or anything really) in that lot is pretty cool, the execution really sucked. blasting music at midnight in violation of noise ordinances only goes to show how selfish and self-centered some people on the hill can be. why not have the dance party earlier like at 9pm? you know, when most people probably AREN’T sleeping.

And a general sense of good times all over the Hill as people claimed the streets as their own for a weekend, some people are asking for more:

How about this Saturday?

The 7th annual Capitol Hill Independence Day is waiting for your to build on it. Not that it needs too much help. Already planned:

  • Free music
  • All-park parade
  • Patriotic tie-dye
  • Root beer floats from Molly Moon’s, eats from Via Tribulani
  • Free cotton candy
  • Urban family portraits

The planned portion of the event runs noon to 5p.

But CHS has also heard about an interesting opportunity in the park later that night. Reportedly, the parks department will be leaving the lights on at Cal Anderson Park’s Bobby Morris play field ALL NIGHT LONG. Ostensibly, this energy expenditure is designed to deter idiots from burning holes in the artificial field turn. But it seems like an opportunity begging to be embraced and extended. Remembering the lessons of the ‘guerrilla dance party,’ creative and respectfully-quiet young patriots might be able to put the Cal Anderson midnight sun to work. Happy Independence Night.

bock |bäk| (also bock beer)
noun
a strong dark beer brewed in the fall and drunk in the spring.
ORIGIN mid 19th cent.: via French from an abbreviation of German Eimbockbier ‘beer from Einbeck,’ a town in Hanover.

Sounds like a plan!

Not sure what’s going on with my headline field but suddenly it’s typosville around here. New rule!

what if we were to hold a “night market” style party? it could be part community garage/craft sale (maybe tap people from i heart rummage), part entertainment (local bands until 11 and then down-tempo djing until sunrise) and of course food vendors (i’d think we might get via tribunali to come back out, maybe skillet and i wonder if rancho bravo would set up a stand).

though it sounds like it might be too much for such late notice but i’ve always liked the idea of a night market and it’d be a good way to mix two parts of the community (club kids/bar hoppers and residents). just a thought.

There is an iron clad rule – Bobby Morris will ONLY be used for sporting events. Period. Nothing else, call them if you do not believe.

Nice ideas, a bit late, where else to do them with only a few days?

4th of July around here is only special for the fireworks … Cal Anderson event will be OK cause the park is so fine.

A quiet game of bingo is sport, I think.

i think this is awesome. night market, bingo, food, blankets, and so on. who do we call about making it legit?

Given concern around noise, probably better to plan small, quiet. Pretty sure nobody can give formal approval but also pretty sure you won’t run into scheduled games.

i think in the spirit of taking back public land this would be an instance where we wouldn’t go after the blessing of the seattle parks department. i’m sure it’s not illegal to go onto the play field if you aren’t playing sports. it might be against the rules if you want permission but nobody will be arrested if we all show up and throw down blankets.

the idea of bingo, maybe some music (noise levels), food and even some crafty sales could be pulled off. of course this all hinges on pulling everything together between now and saturday morning which is where i see the issue being – timing.

if food vendors ever need a permit from the city they might be smart not to go into something with out permits …
… perhaps they can be near, not on park turf

… course if the taco place and the ice cream place stay ope LATE … well, starvation averted … and with special patriot pricing, please

and we could always acquire a bunch of soccer balls, in case there was any question about what we were doing out there on the fields. anyone up for a trip to goodwill?
