Oh, sorry. You’re a chicken rancher? Our bad. 15th Ave’s The Cherry Hill Urban Farm is hosting a chicken coop building party and BBQ potluck on Saturday. We checked in with Scott Allison, one of the farm’s organizers, about the event — sounds like a fun way to get into the hyperlocal food thing and meet some future farmers of America types, Seattle style. They’ll also have chicken coop experts on hand to help you build your own.
We are going to have an all day event (9am-9pm) at our urban farm on Cherry Hill this Sat. So if you are sustain-ably minded, a gardener, an urban farmer or would simply like to attend a fun gathering for those in the local area please stop by.We really hope to be building several coop, live chickens, live music, a nice BBQ and potluck and a few good spirits among us here on the new urban farm in Capitol Hill. We are going to be hosting other sustainable events throughout the year
The chicken coop will be built here on Sat and if you want to get the guidance of professional builders and can bring your own materials we will have what it takes to put them together.
( please let us know if you want to build your own coop on Sat so we can make arrangements) .
We will have a contest for the best coop if we get several being built! :)
We are still seeking out chickens too so that would be nice if anyone wants to thin their flock, bring them by!
We are still seeking out music so……. a potluck dish and or a small donation would be nice.
Hope to see ya here !
No permits are currently required in Seattle to add a coop to your — or a friendly neighbor’s — property but city laws limit you to three outdoor pets per household so choose wisely. Urban chicken ranching is part of the city’s history — Seattle Times wrote up Seattle as urban chicken coop center of universe way back in 2002. You can also check out http://citychickens.com/ for more info on keeping your flock thriving. We recommend vigorous raccoon defense given some of the anecdotes we’ve been the unfortunate recipient of over the years.
Cherry Hill Farm is located at 1127 15th Ave out in the rural area just beyond Radio Point down Central District way.
What time should I show up?
Organizers are saying 9am-9pm so it’s a wide window. I’ll update the post as I shouldn’t have left this out.
Just a little chicken joke…
Why does a chicken coop have 2 doors?
….
….
Because if it had 4 doors it would be a chicken sedan.
sorry for the lame joke, but I couldn’t miss the opportunity.
Last time I checked the ordinance, 3 domestic foul are allowed for the first 5000 sqr ft of lot size, the 1 checken for every 1000 sqr ft more.
