Woman says stern lecture foiled E. Thomas bus stop street robbery

If you find yourself in the unfortunate circumstance of getting held up on Capitol Hill, maybe talking some sense to your would-be mugger is the best defense. Fresh on the heels of this morning’s street robbery and arrest near Four Columns Park, CHS has learned of another Capitol Hill attempted hold-up that happened early last Thursday morning — but this one had a much different outcome.

According to a Seattle police report on the incident, a woman told police she fended off another woman armed with a small revolver who jumped her and tried to steal her purse at the bus stop near E. Thomas and 19th early last Thursday morning by lecturing the mugger about “trying to rob her in her own neighborhood.” The woman told police the female robber “became upset about being lectured, and left the area without obtaining any property,” according to the report. The suspect was described as a black female, aged 18 to 20 with a thin build. The woman told police the suspect was hiding in the bushes behind the bus stop before the hold-up attempt. She said she told the suspect she didn’t have any money or valuables and then gave the suspect the stern talking-to.

After she got home, the woman said she waited an hour to call police because her cell phone battery was dead. A search of the area once police were called was not successful.

Is that the skinny, young, black chick I see in the neighborhood asking for bus money all the time?

She needs a stern pistol-whipping with her own gun. What brazen criminals you have in Seattle. Must be due to the softie DA office.

Another advocate of summary corporal punishment, no need for a trial. Annie, if you really mean that, I hope you’re caught before you kill someone. Any DA who wouldn’t prosecute you certainly would be “soft on crime”.

I know that a story like this is intended to make us all feel a little better about the rise in potentially violent crime in the ‘hood, but I have to say what this woman did was pretty stupid. There is good reason why you will always hear that the best thing to do when being held up or attacked is to give the attacker what they want, flee as soon as possible and contact the authorities as soon as you can after that. This woman is lucky that she didn’t get beat or shot as soon as she started trying to talk sense into her attacker, it’s an anomaly a should be treated as such.

I’m not saying we should just bend over in the face of attacks or muggings, but have some freaking sense people! If someone brandishes a gun to you remember that your voice is not going to beat a freakin’ bullet!

Something is fishy about this story.

Waited an hour to call police because the phone was dead?

Even if your phone is flat-dead, when you plug it into the wall to charge it should have enough charge to make a call. Or go to your neighbors house… must be some other reason for the delay.

“What brazen criminals you have in Seattle.”

What ignorance you have in your head.

Thanks for the info re: the race of the mugger; by chance, What’s the race of the victim? I notice in stories like these the victims race is rarely mentioned & I’m curious.

Additionally, why the long wait before calling the police? Not so sure about the rationale that her cell phone was unavailable. Hm. No other phone in the vicinity? No other person around to borrow their phone? An hour? Really??? Hm…

Careful what you report. Careful what you endorse in your reporting.

The likely hood that criminal is goign to shoot in broad daylight, causing noise, and more eyes on the criminal act is very low. Fight back, take back the night (or day as it were). The police are of little help in these situations, as the street rats know how to hide and blend in. If docile Seattle continues to just freeze in the face of danger, the street rats win.

probably not gonna pull the trigger. just because she wants your money doesn’t mean she’s illogical. She’s probably thought at least a little about not doing anything that will cause the cops to have a bigger reason to catch her after the attack. This is not an anomoly. This is a common story, a norm if you will. Happens to a million people in Queens everyday and used to happen a hundred times a day Times Square until Juliani.

I hate it when people think illogically with their unwarranted fear first, and I hate it even more when people talk with authority about that which they know nothing.

The only reason the mugger has a physical description is because she wasn’t apprehended and is still on the streets. The description posted is the description that the victim gave.

Actually, sboberri is right. People that jump people at bus stops with guns aren’t thinking logically/rationally. You can’t expect them to have common sense (if I shoot someone, I might get in more trouble, etc.).

Further, fear of someone with a firearm is not illogical, it’s the opposite.

I think de-escalation is great, especially if you have no money/valuables anyway. Trying to talk a mugger down is fine. “Fighting back” is irrational and stupid.
