The space is currently home to Crescent Down WorksAnne Michelson who owns Crescent Down Works and the building tells us her business has grown to a point where she needs more room so she’s moving the maker of custom down jackets and vests to Pioneer Square. Michelson sent us an email explaining the move and why retail won’t work for her replacement — the storefront part of the building isn’t really for rent:

Crescent Down Works has gotten pretty popular, mostly in Japan and Europe and we need more space.  I found a great space in Pioneer Square, almost 3 times the space.  Cassandria Blackmore has a gallery in front of the space so retail isn’t appropriate because of the side entry – no street front available.  Not sure what will work in here but we will see what comes up.  Let us know if you have any ideas.

Two other unique spaces currently available in the neighborhood —  in the Odd Fellows building and in the old BMW showroom and garage — are also apparently still in the market for new tenants.

Meanwhile, this entrepreneur has put the long-empty retail space adjacent the Comet to good use.

As I recall they were in the Walgreens building on 15th before it was City People’s Mercantile (when City Peoples’ was in the Post Office round the corner). You’re even older than me if you remember when City People’s was in the Country Doctor building. (or was that Don Shingles Down Works? Got a few bad sectors there, and no backup).

I saw this guy getting arrested yesterday. I dont know why. He was just sitting there making art. He always seems pretty cool. Anybody know the rest of the story?

as I remember ….. City Peoples bought the post office on 15th, were there for years with a great thriving store, loved it, a bit of everything, cool people, lesbian owned, then they sold real estate to Walgreen’s at great profit, Harley B., lead partner/owner is an accountant.

Down works went thru several bankrupcy things to kill its bills – I invested once with them, all gone in the next bankrupcy … that was prior owner … the old days

Is anyone else as tired of these paintings/shattered glass things as I am? The same exact type of stuff has been hanging there forever. This is in the same repetitive vein as Warren Knapp, the guy with the gallery by Bauhaus. Might as well be a Thomas Kincake store.

Yes! CDW was in an upstairs space for a number of years in that building, but city ppls mercantile was beneath them the whole time.other locations include the vita building (behind cafe paradiso, where they roast coffee now), the supergenius tattoo shop, and once upon a time, pioneer square. Now that PS isn’t cool anymore, rents are way down.

Ouch! Kincaid??? Really?? I can understand being tired of seeing the same art. I am ONE artist so you are going to see the exploration of one person not multiple artists as in a gallery situation. I’m lucky to even have a personal window box on E Pike St. I have been on the hill for 12 years smashing glass both figurative and abstract reverse paintings… and an occasional installation piece like 300 boxing gloves etc. I was on the hill when there were abandoned warehouses and not much else. I’ve stuck it out through allot of changes. This place is a part of me. I am a very small part of an amazingly creative community and just trying to continue to make my work. Bottom line is I’m going to continue to make the work that inspires me. Why pick up on me???!!!

Ha! Nice typo at the end but you know what I meant. Really – why pick on artists? Isn’t there anything more important to rant about?

i have to say i totally disagree about Cassandria’s work being boring. i think it is incredibly beautiful. The glass the colors the intricacy, and i am not the only one as i often see people stop to look more closely through the windows. I think it is a nice relief to have a storefront that isn’t asking anything of you. How great to have a storefront that isn’t a bar! I for one hope that we will continue to see cassandria in that little storefront on e pike!

Hey Dave the Elder,
you have your companies mixed up. You are thinking of Don Shingler’s Down Factory, located where Retrofit is now when it was in our neighborhood. Crescent Down Works has never had anything to do with that store and has NEVER EVER gone bankrupt in the 37 years of it’s existence. Get your facts straight.
