Broadway Market QFC wine steward killed in North Seattle shooting — UPDATE: ‘Road rage’

Yancy Noll (Image: Facebook)

Friends have identified the man shot and killed in an unsolved crime Friday night in North Seattle as Yancy Noll, the wine steward at the Broadway Market QFC.

The 43-year-old was gunned down at a stoplight at the intersection of 15th Avenue NE and NE 75th Friday just before 7:30p. Here is the SPD report on the incident:

A man in his early 40′s was fatally shot in Lake City tonight and the suspect remains at large.

Tonight at approximately 7:26 p.m. officers responded to the 7500 block of 15th Avenue NE for the report of multiple shots fired.  Officers arrived on scene and located the male victim sitting in the driver’s seat of his maroon Subaru, which was stopped in the street. The victim had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

SFD medics were called to the scene and transported the victim to Harborview Medical Center where he later died as a result of his injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect pulled up next to the victim in his car and for reasons yet to be determined, fired multiple rounds at the victim, striking him several times. The suspect then fled the scene in his car and remains at large.

The suspect vehicle is described as a smaller silver or gray BMW. The suspect is described as a white male in his late 20′s to 30′s with dark hair.

Homicide and CSI detectives responded to the scene and continue to actively investigate.

Anyone with information about this incident or who may know the identity or whereabouts of the suspect or his vehicle is asked to call 911 or the Seattle Police Homicide Tip Line at (206) 233-5000. Anonymous tips are welcome.

Noll’s Facebook page

A memorial to Noll has grown near the intersection where he was shot — just a few blocks from his NE 70th apartment.

Noll’s death marks the 23rd Seattle homicide in 2012 surpassing the total murders for the city for all of 2011.

UPDATE: Enjoy a recent adventure with Yancy. Thanks to Linda for pointing us to this video of Noll’s recent tandem skydive jump.

UPDATE: Police have posted video that captures the suspect’s vehicle in what they are calling a “road rage” shooting:

Detectives have obtained surveillance photos and video of the car driven by the suspect in a fatal road rage shooting in the Roosevelt neighborhood on September 1st:

Police believe the suspect in the shooting was driving a silver BMW Z4 convertible, with recent body damage and a broken out passenger side window. The suspect’s car looks similar to this one:

He was just at QFC yesterday conducting a beer tasting. Told us any brand you want just let him know and he’ll make sure they have it. A kind person who did not deserve this fate, a friendly face who will be greatly missed.

He was a super friendly, witty guy who always was so helpful and knowledgeable and passionate. We had many conversations about wines from around the world! I will miss seeing him very much at QFC.
My sympathies go out to his family and friends.

This really lessens my faith in humanity. This vicious act was cruel and senseless. My sympathies go out to his loved ones.

Thank you for this. I consider Yancy one of my best friends, and I’ve been devastated over imagining how terrifying his last hour(s) must have been. Thank you for being there for him, and for giving me (us) a little peace of mind in an otherwise senselessly tragic situation.

This tragedy touched two friends, who didn’t even know each other. A friend came by Saturday morning to pick up a Bumbershoot ticket and told me about being at another of their friend’s house which was right at the location and time of the shooting the night before. They heard shots, looked out the window, and went outside to see if there was anything they could do. Good people were already attending, help was on the way. It was quite grim. A stray bullet had entered the neighbor’s home.
In the evening, another friend (a co-worker of Yancy’s) came over after her shift finished and it was then I connected what I thought were independent life story strands. She cried and talked about the victim, saying he was the first person who befriended her when she started working there a few months ago. Good man, good heart. He will clearly be missed.
She said QFC/Kroger is paying for all memorial and funeral expenses. Good on you, QFC.

I’m very saddened to learn of Yancy’s senseless passing. He clearly enjoyed his job and was always very kind and helpful. I will miss his presence at my neighborhood market. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

Couldn’t have said it better.

Such a sweet guy with great knowledge and passion for his work.

I’m glad to hear that QFC/Kroger is stepping up with support. He was a fantastic face to the store/company.

My friends and I have been very hurt by this senseless tragedy. Yancy was like an old zen master in disguise. He always had a smile and great humour for everyone. Everyone knew him by his patience and his happiness. A real beacon of humanity was taken before his time. Rest easy in fluffy clouds, Yancy.

You’ve captured my thoughts too. Yancy was a mensch. One of Capitol Hill’s distinctive lights has been senselessly extinguished. Condolescences to his friends, family and QFC co-workers.

I’ve always seen Yancy at QFC and I just can’t believe it. There is no reason for something so tragic to happen for someone who’s apparently done nothing wrong to deserve this.

I really hope they catch whoever did this and send my condolences to his friends, family and co-workers.

Glad to hear QFC is taking care of the memorial service – always good to see how people/companies can come together to try and overcome such heartache.

Yancy often would yell at me, reminding me that I am wasting my life, working at QFC. I will not let him down and work harder on my artwork and networking. He was truly an amazing person.

This senseless and heartbreaking tragedy – he will be missed dearly and I know the people who loved him will carry his memory and kindness into the world… my sympathies are deep for you all.

There are three silver BMW Z4 convertible’s for sale on Seattle’s CL right now if you want to take a detailed look at the car and see if anything stands out to you that might trigger a memory if you were in the area.
hopefully the other cars in the video frames, or people walking/jogging in the area will recall something, like a street they turned on, music they were playing, any words they heard… anything.

Emma,
I’m a neighbor and friend of Yancy. Our dogs knew each other too and I’m reaching out to find out if Lolla will have a home. I can help foster her if needed. Please contact me! Craigb (at) drizzle dot com
Yancy was coming over this upcoming weekend to brew beer and harvest my hops with me and friends. I had just taken him sailing a few weeks back. So sad to learn of this. I sent him a text MSG. But never heard back.

Hey So — if you remember that car from last weekend, you should definitely contact the police and let them know! Who knows what kind of help it could provide.

It makes absolutely no Sence. Some fkn Asshole with a Gun decides its alright to shoot several times and Kill an innocent Man in his car and just drive off. Police are calling it “Road rage”. So.in other words they don’t know. I truly hope this asshole who.murdered my Friend n Co worker gets his Karma straight down his throat.and out his ass.

I want to extend my sympathy to Yancy’s family and friends at this painful time in their lives. It’s a terrible time for you, I know. Just cling to the beautiful, the happy, the funny memories of Yancy as they will help you through the difficult times. We never truly loose the ones we love.

It’s taken me a few days to be able to look at any of these articles and comments. It’s with tears and anger that I try to navigate my feelings and emotions to even breathe. All of this time Yancy has lived his dream in Seattle, always telling me about his wonderful friends and co-workers he shares his day to day with. Seeing all of the comments here just makes me smile that he truly did have great love for what he did and the people close to him. Thank you all for your nice comments and kind words. I can only hope that the person who took it upon themselves to take my last immediate family member away faces his maker for everything he deserves.

Forever your little sis Yanc,

The police statement indicates the suspect’s car is silver; however the example photo of the car in this article appears to be champagne-bronze. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, it is a disservice to Mr. Noll and the public to not use a photo of the correct color.

Your brother was one of the classiest people that I worked with at QFC. It has been close to ten years since we worked together over in Bellevue, but I was crushed to hear about this. Intelligent, witty, a professional, and just a fun person to be around. I squandered many minutes away in his wine corner just having a great conversation with Yancy. You should very proud of him. I wish you the strength to get through this and remember, he will always live on in your heart.

I cannot believe what is happening to society. I cannot believe this person was in such a hurry that he had time to shoot this man several times over some BS. Where is the humanity?
I know we all have to go, but this man truly didn’t deserve to go this way – you will be missed.

RIP Yancy.

Trina,

I’ve known your brother for many years. I am lucky enough to be one of the many people who sold wine to him. Many buyers in his position are rude, and arrogant, with a sense of self-entitlement, Yancy was none of those things. He was gracious, humble, caring and had the best sense of humor. We are so sad for your loss and words are not enough to to explain the depth sympathy we have for you and your family. Yes, Yancy will be missed, but never forgotten.

Trina,

I so sorry for the pain you must be experiencing. Although I read about the shooting earlier, it wasn’t until this morning that I discovered that it was Yancy. He and I have kept touch over the years since he moved to Seattle. Had him over for dinner a couple times. He was such a warm, loving and funny fellow. It has been almost 40 years since I met you, Yancy and your parents. A major part of my life and now a large chunk has tragically torn away. I wish there was something I could say to make you feel better, but I don’t know what it would be… except Yancy’s life was filled with people who loved and cared for him. Not everyone is quite that lucky. I’ll try to make the memorial on Sat. Will you be there?

I’m convinced this crime will be solved and the suspect will be caught. Modern ballistics can trace the bullets to the actual gun itself which can be tracked more easily than you think. Last but not least, when this guy is finally caught I hope & I prey that he will be violently raped in prison.

Jack Adams

I am reading this because the power of the web sucks you into stories you would never otherwise come across. I am reading about the savage death of a man who offered so much to life and others. However, when I read entries like this:

“I’m convinced this crime will be solved and the suspect will be caught. Modern ballistics can trace the bullets to the actual gun itself which can be tracked more easily than you think. Last but not least, when this guy is finally caught I hope & I prey that he will be violently raped in prison.”

Then my concern about what America has become shudders through my soul. I am sure that this good man, if he could be heard from beyond his grave, would not be voicing such sentiments of revenge. that the man who did this inspires revulsion inside us goes without saying but surely we should not support a penal system where the crime of rape is seen as an extra-judiciary punishment. Such a sentiment surely puts us in the passenger seat of the BMW and not alongside Yancy.

Wow, Heather-Jane, way to perpetuate the stereotype of manipulative women putting words into the mouths of others. I believe Laura was simply trying to state a fact to settle minds with the logic of cause-and-effect. Might I recommend that you think before you post? At least try to understand another point of view :{
