Check out this new biodiesel bus service between Portland and Seattle

http://sharedroute.org/

BY RAYMOND RENDLEMAN

Ecologically conscious Northwesterners needing to shuttle between Portland and Seattle now have a biodiesel-guzzling alternative.

Thanks to a pair of enterprising twentysomething hippies, the 16-passenger “Shared Route” commuter bus debuted on Nov. 17 and runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (go to sharedroute.org for more about the schedule, which also includes a regular stop in Olympia).

Shared Route’s $30 charge for the 174-mile trip to Seattle is competitive with other carriers’: The same trip is $29.50 on the Greyhound bus line and $36-$44 by train on Amtrak. Both those lines charge $5 extra for bikes, however, while that bike fee is included in the new bus’s fare.

Also free on Shared Route’s maiden run was a hug from the patchouli-reeking, dreadlocked driver, 24-year-old Benjamin Koenigsberg, a co-founder of the new service. “We’re running a local business that represents the countercultures,” Koenigsberg says.

Other counterculture touches inside: a half-foot plastic triceratops wearing Jamaican beads on a Rasta-colored scarf, and a sign that says “No smoking on bus (including cigarettes).”

“This totally reminds me of the Green Tortoise,” said a female passenger who only went by “Onys,” referring to the San Francisco-based bus line known for its communal atmosphere.

Shared Route’s first run included passengers from all across the left side of the spectrum. Among them: a “game pad emulator” for Microsoft; a couple of recent high-school graduates working on various organic farms to avoid college; and Eric Lind, who just returned to the States from South Africa, where he was an activist working for apartheid reparations. http://www.wweek.com/editorial/3303/8256/

I’m interested in finding running partners who live in N. Capitol Hill. I’m female, can run during the mid-day (and early morning) and can run anywher from a 9-10 minute mile. Am looking for people interested in running 4-5 miles (maybe more) a couple of times a week.

Would you (CHS) be willing to post this?

thanks,

Can you look into the N. Capitol Hill “Mommie Mafia?” I heard one boasting that because a merchant would not donate to the Stevens Elementary auction, she was going to stop her weekly muffin order and encourage all the other Mommies to do the same.

While all may be fair in kids and capitalism, the exchange led me to think “Do we really want to put a merchant under because they declined the opportunity to donate to your pet cause?” I wonder how many times a day our friendly 15/19th street service providers get hit up? And do we really expect them to “support” the community wth more than just great products/services?

Hey, could you guys investigate what’s happening over at Rainbow? We’ve gone over there twice now and it seems like they are out of stock of everything and don’t seem to be replacing anything. Are they going through some sort of existential crisis or are they going away? Inquiring minds want to know!

At one time there was a dog park in Volunteer Park – but a neighbor on my street got it closed down. What do people think? Do we need an off-lease area for dogs in Volunteer Park?

Now that you guys have come clean – we know who you are – I wonder if we should have a blogger meet-up – like the old days in 2005. Maybe a drink at Liberty. Or perhaps it is better if we don’t know each other. Keeps the mystery alive.

Will my Capitol Hill neighbors open their homes and share their loving and fun neighborhood with a young person from antoher country?

IntoEdVentures, a non-profit exchange program, helps high school students from all over the world, full-fill their dreams of living in America and helping build world peace through cross-cultural friendships.

When you volunteer to host an international exchange student, your world comes alive for a young person from another country. By opening your door, you open a student’s eyes to the real America: real people, real experiences, and real life. At the same time, your generosity of spirit creates a positive view of the United States that crosses oceans—and lasts a lifetime!

Our students all speak English, are fully insured and have their own monthly spending money. Families can be single adults, have young children, have high school children, or no children in the home. Families are only required to provide room and board, and a caring, fun environment!

Hi, Your blog is a great idea! I have lived on the hill (with a hiatus in the central area) since 1981 so I’ve got some perspective. A hardware store would be a very good addition to the neighborhood.

I have an idea for a post–how about profiling small businesses in the area currently located out of people’s homes? My husband started Olive Branch Enterprises a little over a year ago. We bottle imported olive oil from Palestine and Israel, mixed together in a facility approved by the state. See Peace Oil. It sells at Rainbow Grocery and Madison Market also.

I wanted to get the word out regarding our new free service called down2night (http://down2night.com).

On Friday we launched the alpha release here in Seattle as our first city featuring nightlife spots in Belltown, Capitol Hill, Queen Anne, and Pioneer Square, we will then launch in other cities on the west coast.

Description of the service:
down2night allows users to subscribe to a SMS text message service to notify them of events/specials at their favorite bars, clubs, restaurants. Establishments can upload their calendar of events, music performances, promotions, food specials, happy hours, etc. In the early evening of each day of the week the user selects, one SMS text message is sent to their phone listing the events, music, and promotions for that night from their selected establishments.

we need a post on rules of the road on side streets/residential streets in capitol hill. too many drivers here do not stop at intersections. just because there isn’t a stop sign doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stop or at least slow down just in the off chance someone else is driving perpendicular to you. i’ve never seen more moronic and dangerous drivers in my life.

The condo-ification of Capitol Hill continues! I just noticed that a stately, single-bird-family birdhouse was recently replaced by this monstrosity — evidently some bird-townhome/bird-condo type complex.

Bird-developers have no shame. I guess this just means more bird-yuppies and Starbeaks on the hill.

All the cool birds are moving to West Seattle.

A little ways from the ‘hood, but this morning had 10 — count ’em — parks’ employees cleaning white feathers from the Bobbie Morris playfield at Cal Anderson Park. They used those long pincher, pistol grip things and lifted one feather at … a… time… all morning long. Must have been a pillow fight the night before, which left thousands of feathers over the north half of the fields. One of the workers grumbled to me, “Watch your tax dollars at work.”
It was quite a sight.

I’m wondering if you’ve heard anything about the status for this summer of the Madison-Capitol Hill (MadCap) Farmers’ Market, on 20th just off Madison. I know it’s out of the fancypants zone, though more than a few FPZ residents have frequented it in the past. I noticed that the links on the organizer’s website aren’t working, which has me a little worried. Hopefully it’s just an oversight since it’s still the off season.

The loud, rude crowd from Chocolate City (formerly Deno’s)had their hole of a club closed. Good news for the neighborhood there! Very bad news for anyone who lives near Waid’s on Jefferson, because the noise problem has moved. They are ridiculously loud, and even for drunken losers, pretty rude about it. I encourage everyone who has to listen to this to call 911. Every time you hear it. Get these people to shut up! Some of us, though apparently not the patrons of Waid’s, have jobs to wake up and go to.

I notice you have categories for 15th and 19th Avenues, but not for Broadway. I’d think B’way should get as much attention.

I’d love to see articles about light rail coming to the neighborhood and what the future holds, and what we want, given that. I don’t mind condo buildings going up per se, but we badly need inclusionary zoning (require developers to reserve 20-25% of their new units to be affordable to people earning less than the area median income), and it seems to me we still need to use our land better and densify more with a strong, coordinated focus on the future LRT station. That means height limits as well as allowed land uses and parking requirements. Seems to me we have far too much surface level parking in Capitol Hill, and while the density is good, there isn’t much construction of much real height here, and there are large pockets of wasted land, e.g. around Dick’s and Jack in the Box. San Francisco switched to parking maximums instead of minimums. That’s what we should have, and it works well in SF. 290 condos (old QFC site) should NOT come with 400 parking spaces! My apartment building in Washington, DC had 161 apartments with 34 parking spaces, and I think that’s about the right ratio. Seattle doesn’t seem to be doing enough to discourage car use and encourage transit ridership. Given that Broadway from Olive/John to Denny will have a light rail stop in 2013, we need to leverage that investment to get the maximum benefit from it for the neighborhood as well as efficiency for the light rail system.

To Be Continued Productions takes a satirical stab at teenage slasher films for an emo-hipster generation of scream queens in the killer conclusion to Seattle’s popular serial comedy Capitol Hill High, Seeing Red: The Final Period. Four months following Shaniquila Turner’s ill-fated smack overdose, Prom Night approaches, hormones are raging, the sinister Master Plan is revealed and the girls of Capitol Hill High have a bonding moment upon realizing they all share the same homicidal stalker! Capitol Hill High, Seeing Red: The Final Period at Capitol Hill Arts Center 1621 12th Avenue, http://www.brownpapertickets.com $13 Advance/$15 at Door, Fri – Sun at 7:30pm, June 15th through 30th.

Capitol Hill High is a serial comedy that satirizes urban high school life in Seattle’s über-hip Capitol Hill neighborhood. Capitol Hill High, Episodes 1-3 enjoyed sold out performances at the Capitol Hill Arts Center last year and has been featured on Nancy Guppy’s City A Go Go on KCTS and on http://www.jaysonpotter.com . Seattle Gay News applauds its “gleefully stereotyped, yet oddly sympathetic high school personalities.” The Stranger describes Capitol Hill High as a “parade of Pike/Pine-corridor-specific satire” with “rich one-liners,” while Seattle Weekly says “if you don’t like it, transfer to Madison Valley, bitch.”

Neighbors on the east side of Volunteer Park often complain about the lack of a crosswalk or curb cuts/ramps at E. Highland and 15th Ave. E. Families, joggers, strolling nannies, dog walkers, etc., come into conflict with accelerating, chatting drivers who see this as a bit of freeway. Coupled with two bus stops and the start of a park pathway, the tricky corner is in need of some good ol’ Seattle pedestrian friendliness. (A typical scenario: A #10 bus waits for a babysitter with double stroller who can’t get up the curb into the park. Cars are still motoring by.) I, and others, have called the various agencies with jurisdiction there: SDOT, Metro, Seattle Parks; but none of them want to take charge. I’m wondering if a collection of voices, perhaps beginning on this site, might not catalyze a bit of bureaucratic action. (This is not a big-budget project. I’d bet the neighborhood could raise the funds lickety split.) And then we could see about getting an ice cream parlor on 15th. Thanks.

So Capitol Hill: the guy often playing violin for change on 15th (and on Broadway), is to my completely untrained ear, a virtuoso. I asked him if he “used to play in a symphony or whatever.” He said he played for the L.A. and N.Y. philharmonics. “And now you’re on the streets of Seattle?,” I asked. His response: “I’ve got an attitude.” I say give this guy a dollar.

This proposed park is between 15th and 19th…while maybe a bit south of your defined boundaries, it would certainly benefit everyone east of Broadway. The more people who attend the June 14th meeting, the more likely the city will see that there is great interest in adding this park to Capitol Hill. I know you said you don’t post every event around the hill, but I think this is up there with the new light rail station as far as making our hood more liveable. A good visual for your post can be found in the link at the bottom of this comment:

Capitol Hill – Park Acquisition
Recommendation and Update
Public Meeting #2

Park Acquisition: Capitol Hill Urban Center

The Pro Parks Levy targeted funds to acquire land for two new parks in the Capitol Hill Urban Center. Land was acquired for a new park west of Broadway in January 2007, and Parks is now recommending a property east of Broadway for the second new park on Capitol Hill.

Thursday, June 14, 2007 — 7 – 8:30 p.m.
Miller Community Center — Multi-Purpose Room, 330 19th Ave. E.

Recommendation:
East of Broadway: The Pro Parks Levy targeted funds to acquire land identified in the Capitol Hill neighborhood plan for a new park. When Seattle Parks was unable to purchase properties identified in the neighborhood plan, citizens suggested additional sites for consideration at a public meeting in February 2006. Parks has reached preliminary agreement with the owner of one of the suggested sites, and is recommending purchase of a 17,214 square foot property at the northwest corner of 16th Ave. and E. Howell St. for a new neighborhood park.

You are invited to learn more about this proposed acquisition at the June 14 public meeting, and to provide your comments and suggestions.

Hi j and/or k —

You posted earlier about the city acquiring the parking lot at 16th & Howell as part of the parks levy. I’ve gotten involved with a group of citizen activists starting to lobby the city to develop that site (and a similar one at E John & Summit, but that’s out of your range of focus) into p-patches, or to at least include some community gardens in their park plans.

The first meeting for the 16th & Howell site will be at the site, on Sunday, 8/12, at 1pm. Please post about this — we want a big turnout!

The second meeting for the E John & Summit site (it’s a parking lot, north of the Starbucks on Olive) will be on Tuesday, 8/21, at 7pm. That group hasn’t announced the site for that meeting yet, but I will keep you posted.

PS: It’s probably worth mentioning that the waiting lists for the existing Capitol Hill p-patches range from 18 months to 3 years long. Here is a link to the page with a map of all the p-patches, and here is the homepage for Thomas Street Gardens. Some of the same people who pulled Thomas Street Gardens are involved in these new sites.

I would like to see you open up a discussion of the pros and cons of postering on Capitol Hill, and on 15th in particular. It seems to me that 15th is becoming more and more blighted by old posters which have been glued up on any available metal surface, and by staples/residual posters when they are finally removed. The street is looking very tawdry and trashed. There are postering regulations, but they are totally ignored by those who poster. Doesn’t anyone care about the appearance of our neighborhood streetscape?

I am extremely bummed to report that I was assaulted and mugged on 11 E and E Lynn yesterday afternoon in broad daylight a block or so north of Seattle prep. Three assailants got out of a car while two remained in the car with engine running. The three walked up behind me as I was climbing 11th on my bike and demanded my stuff while simultaneously punching me. They got my laptop and wallet, among other things. They then ran back to their car and drove off.

Fortunately, a good samaritan and her daughter got the license plate of the getaway car and they have so far apprehended the driver of the vehicle, who was a young man from Central District driving his poor mom’s car. He had told her he was at football practice.

The driver, 18 years old, agreed to flip on the other assailants in exchange for not getting booked last night.

The police said that a very similar thing happened the day before yesterday not too far away.

Hopefully it was the same guys so they’re now or will soon be off the streets.

I still believe that this is a safe neighborhood.

My Sprint cell phone is now working MUCH better around 19th and Aloha. Perhaps that new tower is operational :)
