Ann Donovan sent this round-up of area hardware stores to the capitolhillnews community group mailing list. We simulcast it here for your utility and enjoyment
From Ann:
I know that we’ve all been hurting some since we lost City People’s Mercantile on 15th Av, and then again when Fred Meyer pulled out of the Broadway Market. I thought I would post some of the area options — including a new store in South Lake Union you might not have heard of.

A nice local paint store with several lines of paint, brushes and other painting supplies. They also carry a line of window covering and carpeting. They keep your color selections on file in case you ever need to pick up more paint.Shop Rite — 15th Avenue , Corner of E Republican

(some things, hit or miss thanks to neighborhood nagging)Broadway/15th Supermarkets
QFC (Broadway Market) has some things in the downstairs I understand, a poor replacement for what we lost in Fred Meyer. You could also try out Safeway on 15thBroadway/15th Drugstores — Rite Aid, Bartells and Walgreens
They all also offer some limited selection of household related items. I found tiki torch fuel at Walgreens for instance, they also carry garden hoses.Madison Park Hardware — Madison Park — all the way down by their shopping district

Lots of assorted items for home and garden of a recycled, fair-trade and organic nature. A good place to look for compact flourescent light bulbs.

Very nice folks. They will also custom order items from the Ace catalog for you if needed, such as when I needed a radiator key for our old hot water radiators and it came in a couple of days. They do it all.

Here’s a shortcut to Lowe’s. Take 24th Ave all the way south. It will hit on Rainier, just a few blocks north of where Lowe’s is. Much faster than taking 12th Av.Home Depot

For good old fashioned human help, and a good selection of building stuff (and it’s on the way to the transfer station), don’t forget
Dunn Lumber (now open on Sundays).
3801 Latona Avenue N.E.
Seattle, Washington 98105
(206) 632-2129
PS: to really convince people that you’re a native (other than by lamenting the loss of Welch’s Hardware), just refer to Madison Park Hardware as “Lola’s”
Dunn is great.
CHS – you should create some CHS wikilists or something. Use http://www.listphile.com or windows live collections or something.
You gotta git your Web 2.0 on
We’re too busy farting around with blogspot templates and appearing in the newspaper (tomorrow morning!) and stuff. Do you have a broken mouse clicking finger or something?
There’s still a pretty big hardware section at the QFC on Broadway, taking up the whole basement floor. I don’t think anything was really lost when Fred Meyer pulled out.
Also, Stewart Lumber, on Rainier just south of I-90, is a great old-school place.

I would also include West Marine on Mercer & Terry in SLU. Although it caters primarily to boaters, they nevertheless stock quite a few items that would be useful to householders: biodegradeable cleaning supplies, paint & varnishing supplies, glues & epoxies, and the like.
I like at 18th and Pike and I’m wondering where you two might go (close by) to buy a bathroom scale?
City Hardware sent us a mail — they’re located at 9th and Harrison. The address in the post is incorrect.
