Naming a Capitol Hill baby

Not saying we would ever do this to a child. And the results here aren’t legally binding. But, can you suggest a Capitol Hill-tribute baby name? Don’t give us your best one, of course — you’ll want to save that for you or friends or family to use. Just share your 2nd place pick here.

How about Thomas John?

Before you go there, don’t forget that the reverse order (John Thomas) is sometimes used as a euphemism for the penis in the UK.

It first came to my attention when D. H. Lawrence’s novel Lady Chatterley’s lover was published in Britain: Lady Chatterly uses it as an affectionate term for part of her gamekeeper.

In true Seattle fashion, E. John Street changes its name ot E. Thomas Street outside my house (causing endless confusion) and we frequently refer to it as John-Thomas Street.

Seriously, though, there’s a lot to be said for simple short, easy to spell and pronounce kids’ names. Both of my kids changed their first names when they were old enough to ( Nicholas -> Nick, Elspeth -> Ely)

Prospect.

(I see good things in your future.)

It’s a little unusual, but (I think) in a kind of nice old-fashioned way. And a little less expected than Denny or Olive.

Nobody’s suggested a name that includes “Republican” yet.

Did you know that a Capitol Hill resident once petitioned the City to change the name from Republican Street to Non-Partisan Street?

Straying from the streets theme…

How about

Bailey (as in Coy)
Martina (as in Dina)
Savage (as in Dan)

Nick must be short for Nickerson Street Saloon or Mayor Greg Nickels.

I like Savage — but only if pronounced Saw-vaw-j

How’ bout “Hill”?

It’s sufficiently earthy.

Or you could just nickname your baby “Cap”.

or “Cappy”

For a boy…Easton Parker
For a girl…Madison Olivia

I’m not from Seattle…so, not familiar with the Capitol Hill area…but, thought it interesting to participate in this post…I chose these name combos…because they are names of young students I’ve worked with in the past…plus, they can be reversed…Best to you both.

Vic or Viv – people may assume that they’re short for -tor and -ian, but you’d know they were really short for -trola and -ace. Perfect if you have boy/girl twins.

Less obvious c.h. related ones, all male: Cal (after Anderson)? Or James, after the developer James A. Moore developer who named Capitol Hill in the first place.

Or to name a boy after the hill in a very literal sense: Cahill, an anglicized version of the gaelic name Cathal (though it’s usually a family name rather than a first name, but that’s never stopped anyone).

Other obscures ways of doing it: Colin, or Colleen – especially if paired with a middle name that starts with ‘A’, gives you something that sounds like Hill in French (la colline), Spanish (la colina) or Italian (la collina). Or Monty, for Portugese (o monte). You do lose the ‘capitol’ part, though. Hey, can’t have it all…

If only you lived in South Lake Union or westlake instead of Capitol Hill, then you could have the wonderful Nanette Winona – would probably be the only kid ever with a proper name that’s actually named after a zip code.

One word that describes the embodiment of Capitol Hill would be “Diversity”. So, “Di” or “Diver”; girl or boy nicknames. :-)

Are you people really so insipid or so publicity crazy that you have to subject your unborn child to this scrutiny? Thank goodness Texans have better judgment. I wish people in Washington had as much sense as they do scenery. Dr. DMS, Professor of Clin Psy

Get a grip, Deb. The baby isn’t “subjected” to anything. And as far as the “Texas bellowing.”… Texas is impressive…only to Texans. Talk about insipid.

How about Anderson Lincoln, in honor of Cal Anderson Park which was formerly called Lincoln Park prior to being renovated in ’05?

A previous poster suggested “Cahill”, short for Ca(pitol) hill. A great middle name would be “Sealth”, for Chief Sealth (Seattle). For a girl: I suggest
“Louisa” (for Louisa Boren Park), “Raine” for our lovely winter climate!

Cahill Sealth Carder (boy)
Louisa Raine Carder (girl)

I like sarah davies idea for Bailey so How about Bailey Anderson or Bailey Pine for a boy. And then Olivia Lynn for a girl (bringing in both north and south Capitol Hill). Good luck naming the baby!

Ok, I have to admit this is not quite in keeping with your effort, but two names I really like but didn’t get to use as we negotiated the names of our baby twins (born earlier this year) – Brennan (traditionally a boy’s name, but you could use Bren as a nickname for a girl) and Carson. Whatever you choose, best wishes to you and your baby.

Hi there!!

I find your “Tribute to Capitol Hill” baby-naming contest to be VERY humorous and original!!

Here’s my suggestions:

(I’m assuming at this time that you do NOT already know the sex of the baby?):

FOR A BOY BABY:

“Ward”, “Mercer”, “Thomas”, “Denny” and “John” are all streets that are located in or near Capitol Hill.

FOR A GIRL BABY:

“Madison” is a street that is somewhat “near” Capitol Hill (closer to First Hill?) and could be shortened to “Maddie”.

If we leave off the “connection-to-Capitol-Hill” requirement, here are some other names that could potentially work:

FOR A BOY BABY:

Aidan
Brendan
Brandon
Branson
Morgan

FOR A GIRL BABY:

Morgan (Hmmm, a dual-use name)
Marina (my personal favorite)
Marnie

Don’t forget you guys can go over to the cemetery by Volunteer Park where all the founders of Seattle are buried. You might be able to come up with some great names, not to mention they might not all be that common anymore which means your child will be an orignal! Good luck.

I suggest Harrison Broadway or Harrison East

Wesa

Just make sure it’s not too strange, as one who grew up with an unusual name can relate.

Condo Hipster. Works for a boy or girl.

I agree with Wesa. Be sure the name you pick is not too unusual. However, don’t go with Emily or Jacob as that’s what everyone went with last year.

My wife and I are still trying to figure out what name to go with. I built a Google Maps mashup with popular baby names statistics to help in the process. Perhaps you’ll also find it useful:

The jewel of Capitol Hill is Volunteer Park, an Ohlmstead treasure. To be a volunteer, you have to be earnest and charitable, so if a boy ‘Earnest’, and if a girl ‘Charity’.

The lifeblood of Cap Hill is Broadway, to get to Broadway ya gotta be a thespian, so for a middle name: ‘Thespis’ for a boy, ‘Thespia’ for a girl. (Thespis = father of Greek tragedy).

Good luck!
